sempervivum

17 years ago

most of us have these wonderful little succulents in our yards or in containers . i truly love mine !  from rock walls , {{gwi:444094}} {{gwi:444093}} {{gwi:587298}}  to containers{{gwi:587300}} these hardy little guys are great . drought tolerant , cold hardy and basically no maintenance . the endless variety of sizes and shapes and colors is fascinating!

sempervivum are not really known for their flowers but it is very interesting to watch them form a stalk and flower . and how sad that after it flowers , it will die, leaving only the pups behind to begin the cycle anew.  i have a few types that actually bloom every year for around 1-1.5 months . really noticeable blooms that reach for the sky . and then we have some that have blooms so tiny and delicate that you must pay very close attention or you will miss them altogether{{gwi:587301}} {{gwi:444092}}

another plant family i enjoy using with sempervivums is the orostachy . these are great little guys that can add a ton of color to a succulent area , from deep browns , greys greens and reds . they also add a height to the succulent garden because they bloom every year on a stalk . {{gwi:444090}} {{gwi:444089}} {{gwi:587302}}

we have been collecting crested sempervivums for years , rarely have we had any actually produce crested pups , but, now, out of hundreds that i have collected,  we have 3 that actually produced crested pups . how exciting!

Â
one never knows what shapes will  form , but i think they are all cool . it's the range of variation that is so engrossing.

    Very cool Eddie!!!! I think the one crested looks like a woman's shoe! I love the ghost plant( or at least that is what I think it is called) it reminds me of my great aunt who always had them growing in urns on her front porch. I don't know how many times I brought starts home and could never keep them alive!!! I love the wheel barrow ideas, I have an old one that I grew herbs in last year, maybe I will do a little something different this year.

    Thanks for sharing!!!

    I love those pics. They're very interesting plants. I may have to start me a little container next spring and see what cool combinations I can come up with.

    Eddie,

    Your sempervivum and various succulents are quite interesting. I too like the crested one that looks like a womens stilletto. I've not seen any of the crested succulents they look very interesting. Your wheelbarrow gardens are WONDERFUL!

    I started collecting succulents a couple years ago and put together this basket along with a couple others that I can't find photos of. I love them, but in our zone, we can not grow most of them outdoors. I can grow various sempervivum outdoors.

    Thanks for sharing your photo. Here is a basket i put together and keep in my gh.

    They are so cool! I really like the one that has pink flowers! Your rock display is great! I just planted some hens and chicks and different sedums this year. I am not sure how they will do over the winter.
    Great display!

    gm, thanks for looking at my pics .

    joyce , in zone 7 , you should be able to grow many types that are winter hardy . sedums, sempervivims , and orostachy.

    knotz , the grey succulent is a type of orostachy. its a fast spreading type and hangs well at the edges of pots . it really adds color to succulent gardens .

    tj , can you please post pic again , i can not make it enlarge.

    neonposie , santa said you can not have any of my baby succulents lol lol lol

    mary , wheellbarrow gardens are great , just keep in mind to add height . i try to get at least 3 layers of height. herbs or succulents , it will get everyones attention .
    carmie , these little guys need very little attention . i hope you can find some this spring that is hardy for you .

    These are all so cool Eddie!!! I'm lovin' your pics.... The wheelbarrow is very neat but the rock garden is to die for. I'm a huge fan of cactus and succulents. Don't really know if any of mine are sempervivum's... Would the Black Prince echiveria and ghost plant be considered semps? On about half of what I have I ended up with faded tags and lost the names. I was told that some of it was very rare but I really don't have a clue. Also have some of the basics like different jade's, ric rac, donkey tail, string of pearls & string of bananas, different aloe's, agave's, starfish cactus, etc etc etc. I'm a HUGE fan of these types of plants...They get me through the winter!!! I really don't know what of mine might be hardy (if any of it), so keep it all in the "sunroom" (or hippie-hideout) at just above freezing temps for the winter. Thanks for posting your pics. Would love to see more.

    I love your gardens & containers but the wheelbarrow is my favorite. I used to have a few different kinds but I guess they got crowded out by other bigger things. Once a 7 foot brug has shaded it, a plant is never the same. LOL

    Oh, I really love those. I think the one looks like a womans shoe as well. I need to post some pics of mine and see if you can tell me if they might be cold hardy or not. I know one of them wasn't since I went outside this afternoon to water and it was white and mushy boohooo. The others looked ok so I moved them to the front porch with everything else that hasn't gone into the garage already.

    Eddie,

    I'm not sure how to get the photo enlarged without it taking up the entire screen and making everyone scroll from side to side. Sorry about that everyone.
    {{gwi:587318}}

    Do you keep the flowers spikes on and allow your succulents to bloom? I have quite a few that are blooming and don't know enough about them.

    Eddie I think you sell them too. Don't you? I know where I am going for them when the time comes. Is it spring time to plant them in the rocks?`So much to learn oh me oh my.

    You guys made me totally addicted to EVERYTHING I see hahahaha

    Hi Eddie :)

    I did a search for orostachy sempervivum and didn't find that one that looks like "flowers", the grey one.

    I'd really like to have that one...Any chance you know the exact name so I can find where to purchase some??

    Thanks...knotz

    They are all really cool looking. I am so happy. The bowl of mine that I thought bit the dust has little tiny babies popping up so I will keep them in the garage with the other plants. I forgot to take pics of my others today. I'll try tomorrow. Those crested ones are really cool. Lenette you must have seen that garden show I saw with them on there and they had made an underwater reef out of them. I thought they were beautiful. I wrote down the name of a black one they had on the show but it wasn't hardy here so I quit looking for it.

    ladylotus , ty for the pic , it looks great . i always allow my flower spikes to bloom , most are intence in color . what is you basket lined with? do you have good drainage ?

    givelittle gets lot ,
    i do sell orostachys sometimes on enternet, but most of my succulents go to the local market .

    Eddie,

    I have the basket lined with a little piece of rubber liner from my pond. The soil has quite a bit of sand in it and I keep it on the dry side. They seem to be growing very well and I can't wait until I can buy more this spring. I love them.

    I have a couple other containers with them also. Very easy to grow.

    Kristy, I never saw that show. I will have to watch for it. I first saw an article a few yrs ago when I subscribed to Sunset magazine. I saved the article and put it in my, 'someday I will make this file' -got a bunch of stuff like that LOL! I have been collecting stuff here and there to make my own. I even found some cool dried spiky puffer fish and some other critters to add.

    Later we stopped by Quail Botanical Gardens when we were in CA and I saw in again in person. There are a few other places that also have the underwater sea/ocean reefs with succulents as well. A friend of mine in AZ has a great one but its not public because they have alot of very rare stuff.

    Here's another good site (copy and paste in) click on the thumbnails on the left of the page.

    This is the original sunset article (found it online)
