Edna, I have been trying to find seeds, and have not been able to. I think I will have to break down and get the plants this spring. Instead of getting Dayliles I will get Iochromas plants. I hope they have the pink ones in the spring, I only want pink and purple. Barbra,
I'm not even gonna start looking at those yet. I got 8 more days till 2008 then I'll look lol. This morning I went to Lowe's and bought a Intrique Tree Rose though :D I can't believe they already had thier roses out!
You would best do plants. Thompson & Morgan is where we got our first seeds many moons ago. Of the 6 seeds which were highly priced only one sprouted, I would of been better buying a plant.
Gloria, Barbra and Edna I have a couple pods from a scarlet iochroma that I will send you all. The seeds are very different then brugs and daturas and are tiny and imbedded in a goopy pulp. The pods are dried now and the seeds will need to be soaked out in water. I wouldn't soak them until you are ready to plant them. I had pretty decent germination with seeds. I just surface sow them and keep them warm. I've started them in covered and uncovered containers. Covered is probably better but be careful about mold and rot. If uncovered make sure they don't dry out. I take them off the seed mat once they are a few inches tall. Gloria I have your address but I need Barbra's and Edna's. Karyn
Once it warms here - I'm going to get the plants also. The blue and the deep wine just look stunning.
I wasn't able to locate seeds either. But I'm not in a place to buy plants or seeds right now. Can't start seeds yet - and can't have plants shipped yet.
I'm going to have to order seed mats on line. Was going to jump some tomatos to grow inside for us. But more wanted the space for the iochs. (grin) Maybe have to grow them upside down. (grin)
Can't find anyone that sells seed mats locally. That's so strange. I'll have to get them on line.
Dweeb I packed up all the iochroma seeds I had for the folks I listed above. It's impossible to tell how many seeds are in the pod once it's dry but maybe someone will have some extras once they soak the pods to separate the seeds out. Karyn
Hi Dweed: I agree. Those lite and dark blues are fab. looking. Will certainly put them on my "Come On Spring" list!! Your weather has been sounding cooold. Christmas Day here was beautifully warm (pool weather if the pool was heated.) Enjoyed my morning coffee by sitting in the yard in my tee shirt watching the cats spread out and rolling in the catnip!! I thought about you in the wind and tried to send some warming thoughts. Today it is cold again. hi 50s to lo 60s. So far not the big winds we've had warnings about. Pack it all up (including Jake) and come on back to Cali! Gloria
Yea - wouldn't I love to! Loved the weather there.
If we keep BOUNCING - it's gonna confuse my plants again. And I'll lose another Paulownia if this keeps up. (Now there's one really. . . STUPID. . . . tree.)
It's also known as an Empress Tree. There are a few types - Tomentosa which grows larger than the Fortunei, which is what I have.
One of my Fortunei hit 30 feet in 3 years. I'm right on the edge of it's zones. I was using it for some desperately needed shade FAST.
Well last year - when we had a stretch of 60s in Feb - the sap started running - and then in march, it pitched down into the teens. Lost the main trunk. But it suckered all around it so I picked the strongest looking shoot and cut the rest down. I was going to have flowers this year on it except it didn't make it. So - give it another shot.
It's invasive in warmer areas - and I find it popping up randomly here and there but not a problem here in Illinois. I guess it's a nuisance in other areas.
If I remember correctly it took about 2 weeks for the iochroma seeds to sprout on a seed mat. I started more last summer outside and I think it was about the same amount of time. Paulownia trees are beautiful but they are invasive here. That and the Catalpa are both nice trees but grow so fast that it can be a problem removing the volunteers if you don't catch them quick. I have a volunteer Catalpa that I love (when it's not infested with Catalpa worms) that was well over 20' tall within 5 years. Karyn
I tried a volunteer Catalpa - it didn't make it. DH likes them because they remind him of his childhood.
Maybe I'll try another one here rather than down at Parent's place. Hard rock clay down there and have to amend everywhere to plant something.
For instance - the parents were disappointed their pawlownia was only 3 feet in one year. That's it. Mine hit 6 - then 15, etc. That's how awful that clay soil is down there. Strangles everything except weeds. (grin)
Mine were all definitely up within a month. I don't soak them or anything before hand, just surface sow.
Dweeb we have solid red clay soil here. I wish the Catalpas wouldn't take root! I'll see if I can pull any up without breaking the roots in the spring and I'll send them to you. I can probably find some Catalpa seed pods if anyone wants seeds. Karyn
