help me find..please?????????

I am looking for a tree fern that a really mean lady on my street has. It comes up every spring/summer here in Detroit Michigan zone 6. I am sure it it is a type of tree fern, it is very cute it has the trunk and the fronds are on top like a fraggle, (remember them?). Well anywho I would have asked the lady who tends the beautiful garden but if you pause 5 seconds too long in front of her house she starts screaming and waving her rake or whatever is in her hand at the time, (she even threw her drink at some kids last summer.....so now you see my problem.) So if anyone knows what type of fern this is I would be greatful to find out the name so that I may purchase a few!

If you could get a picture it would help... or ask/look around at your local nursery. How tall is the trunk?

It's not a tree fern. All tree ferns are relatively tender. The only places in North America that are mild enough for tree ferns are the semi-tropical southeast and a narrow coastal strip along the Pacific. Perhaps it is Ailanthus altissimus or some other deciduous tree.

Hey there Garden Pooter!

Like Dick_sonia said, this can't be a true tree fern. If it is a fern, it may be the royal fern, Osmunda regalis. Sometimes large plants can form a short trunk (I've seen a couple extreme examples with 2' trunks). They are available from various dealers of ferns and native plants. Here's a link about this fern.

wow, I just cannot let go of the description you gave on the behavior of your neighbor. If your statement is true, it seems like such a sad state of mind and heart in which someone could exist. Hopefully working in and enjoying her lovely garden lawn gives her some comfort.
