What to Keep?

How do you decide what to keep and what not to?

I am being over-run by plants right now. I need some criteria.

I thought I would cut out the white ones since they do little for me. But without white, you cannot see the contrast of the colored ones.

It really comes down to what you Love.. OR if you plan on selling them. If you are going to do some serious trading or selling then you need the NAMED Brugs.. If it is just for your personal pleasure then you grow the ones that work for you..âºâº

www, with the cuttings I took....they are eliminating themselves as time goes by.

Cause some make it, and some just don't :-(

I know that is such a hard thing to do. I can't lol

Oh don't get rid of all the white ones! I loooove white flowers, especially in the evenings.
And you are right, white, or light yellow next to other colors makes the other colors pop !Its like adding highlights to a painting.

Get rid of the look-alikes. There are so many that look like they could be the same plant. Choose the one that performs best for you, then eliminate the similar looking ones.

I've got a shovel that's itching to root prune a few things in the perennial bed. I've got lots of new seeds I'll be sowing over the next few months to replace things that just didn't do it for me this year. If it can't survive a couple weeks in good soil without rain or supplemental water, it's gone. Even the brugs held up pretty good so of course, they'll stay. Some things just don't do well without regular rainfall. I'm looking at plants with deep or large root systems.

I used to have 40-50 that I needed to house in the GH/Winter house every winter.

Now I am down to only 10.
Of the 10, 2 are ones I registered.
I kept double pink, white and orange, 2 variegated ones, an aurea-type single pink and white, a single versi type white with a magnificent fragrance, a single versi-type pink and I can't recall what the 10th one is. So I kept an assortment of colours, shapes sizes and fragrances and 2 that I personally registered. Keep ones that have a special meaning for you or that please your eye and/or your nose..

LOL WWW! But think what a great time you had getting all those cuttings. You must have a green thumb if they are all surviving and creating your 'problem'. Many of my new ones will still be on the smaller end of their potential size so I'm thinking of mixing 2-3 colors in my half wine barrels this year. I have a bunch of the half barrels and not so many larger containers to house the big rootballs I'm carrying over dormant.
These are hard decisions but then again planning for next spring/summer helps us all get through the winter months.
Wish I could help you choose the 'keepers' but I can't even figure out what to eliminate of my own!

P.S. glad I was able to function as one of your 'enablers' in this addiction - LOL

Oh, Will! You know you don't really want to eliminate any. You're still looking at ones you want.

BTW, H promised me a larger hoop house next year!!!! Actually needed it this year.

Good luck deciding. I don't have a single plant I would willingly get rid of. The ones that die are the only culling that gets done around here or I will give the to friends so I can still see them, lol. I am going to put more brugs in the ground next year though. Its just too many in pots to take care of over winter. A brug forrest would be nice in the ground, lol. Will be more choosy about which ones to winter over and which ones to let come back from the roots. That will give me more space to winter over my other tropicals which I love too.

I'm like Kristy and usually allow fate to decide for me. If I only had brugs to worry about I wouldn't have an issue but they are the least of my concern. It's the stuff that doesn't go dormant that's a problem for me.

I figured out a great plan- I suckered my mother in Cali to take some cuttings. I was able to send her three boxes full. They were duplicates. She is getting them ready. I will corrupt her plant-loving heart with my brug love. Everyone wins.
