For a smaller fern, I like the Korean Rock Fern. Only problem is that it leafs out
early, and takes some cold damage up here in the foothills. In a zone 9, however,
cold shouldn't be a problem.

For a medium, graceful fern with unique foliage color and outstanding texture, I like the
Alaskan Fern (which is just now unfurling in these parts).

For a medium-sized native fern, I like our various Dryopteris (Oak Woodland Fern) species.
These guys are great performers through cold-wet and hot-dry periods, but they do better with
water and protection from the intense sun. Those in sun grow very compact and upright.

For a medium to large, thick, colorful, heavy frond fern, I like our native Western Swordfern.
The old foliage often turns a purplish hue, and the new fronds contrast nicely with their green.
This is one of the more messy ferns, but the spent fronds can be used for mulch around the yard.

And for a large specimen fern, I love our native Giant Chainfern (Woodwardia fimbriata).
The Chainfern grows very large - be advised! - so planting it in an appropriate spot is critical.
In the wild, I've seen these growing seven feet tall, possibly taller, and just as wide.
Truly my favorite.
