Pinus ÃÂ schwerinii (hybrid P. wallichiana ÃÂ P. strobus - a lot hardier than P. wallichiana)

Resin

Thanks, Resin. I've seen the cultivar 'Wiethorst' but never the species, it looks good. Now to return and scavenger some cones. There were a few still hanging in the tree and some on the ground. Hopefully they're not all empty.

Dave

There's just a possibility it could instead be a hybrid P. wallichiana ÃÂ P. peuce; this hybrid is known, but isn't commonly seen (and doesn't have a name). If you get a cone, can you post a close-up pic or two?

Resin

Dave, it doesn't have to be sure that you will get the same one from seedlings as the one at your pic.
This is because this plant is a cross.
You can get straight one's from one original plant but also from the other.
The percentage of the true cross seedlings isn't know and you will see the difrences at a later age...
If I were you I would let it grafted :0)

I may do a few grafts next winter, love the long needles. As for the seeds, they could be interesting, but variable as you mention. Not sure how useful they could be as understocks?

Here's a close up of a cone.

Thanks! Does look more like P. peuce ÃÂ P. wallichiana, I can't see any clear P. strobus characters there. It'd need a DNA test for definite identity though.

'Fraid that cone is too old (looks like autumn 2009 crop) to have any seeds in though, white pines are very efficient at shedding their seeds. You'd need to re-visit in late September or early October and pick some fresh green cones.

Unfortunately I was too busy and forgot to visit this tree at the optimal time for a cone harvest. I stopped yesterday though and got a few, not totally empty. Still showing P. peuce cross with P. wallichiana?

Yes!

Resin

Thanks again Resin. I'm updating and confirming my notes on this tree. I have a few strobus understocks for grafting this winter and some rootmaker cells/trays I'm excited to try out with the seeds.
