Good morning to you, Nancy. Lots of rain here today, in addition to what we had yesterday, last night, and will get tomorrow. In short, a very rainy Labor Day weekend here in northern Michigan. We may get a break this afternoon.

At the moment I'm batting about 0.500 on the abbreviations. I can't totally remember all four words for jpeg. I know gui, com, blog, and gif. I don't know aim, bc, or CIM.

bc could be a country code used in URLs, but I don't know what country it might be. I know ca is for canada, but provinces don't get their own code too, do they?

Will be watching for clues.

Actually, provinces do sort of get there own extension - if you work for the province of Ontario, for example, it is gov.on.ca. Not too complicated, and we pronounce it like a word.

CIM, is interesting, it has several meanings: it could be the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum - it could also be the Cleveland Institute of Music. It has another more common use though.

gui is pronounced gooey. I always wondered what it meant after I heard it said on Criminal Minds - Garcia's admirer said she had the best he'd ever seen, before he'd met her. Very funny, when you know who the character is......

All I remember about jpeg that it is a graphics file format where g stands for group and p is something about photo.
GUI is what we all use since we stopped having to type commands into our computers: Graphical User Interface
Com is part of a domain name standing for commercial.
Don't know aim or bc.
Blog is short for web log.
Don't know CIM
Gif is another graphics file format: graphical i(something) format.

jpeg - Joint Photographic Experts Group, which created the standard. This a commonly used method of lossy (a class of data encoding) compression for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality.

gui - Graphical user interface - as Tm noted - how we talk to our machines, usually with icons.

com - derived from the word commercial, indicating its original intended purpose for domains registered by commercial organizations. However, eventually the distinction was lost when .com, .org and .net were opened for unrestricted registration.

aim - AOL Instant Messenger

bc - Blind copy - this is a form of politeness on email that I often forget. To protect the email address of your friends and family, it is proper etiquette to send to yourself, then blind copy to all your recipients. Gotta start doing that.

blog - a truncation of the expression web log. Typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first).

CIM - this could be so many things, as noted!! The Common Information Model (CIM) is an open standard that defines how managed elements in an IT environment are represented as a common set of objects and relationships between them. This is intended to allow consistent management of these managed elements, independent of their manufacturer or provider.

gif - Graphics Interchange Format (better known by its acronym GIF) is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.

And there you go - all these things that we use everyday - akin to magic when they work!!
