need advice -Lady Ferns

I just moved into this new house 2 months ago and there is a VERY large abundance of lady ferns in the back yard. Very well shaded with moderate sunlight and on the edge of the woods. There must be at least 100 of these Plants I have now. Anyway, when we moved in, I noticed that some of the ferns had been turning brown, mostly on the perimeter of the garden, and now most of them are brown. I would like to know if this is normal for the Lady fern, or is this rust? Also is it ok to gut these down anticipating that they will grow back in the spring? And if it is rust, how do I treat them. WIsh I could attach a pic. If someone is knowledgeable enough with these I would like to send a pic for good advice
