Too far South for Dahlias?????

Kiddos and I have been drooling over the pictures of Dahlias and now we think we just have to have some - an orange one tops the list. The problem .. . I don't think I have ever seen any growing in our area and none of my friends who garden have ever tried them either. Neighbor lady, who is a wealth of gardening info to us, says her mother was successful growing them (40+ years ago) but that she's never tried them. Their gardens are mostly vegetables.

Most all of the info I find on the net comes from more Northern climates -

A $20 hole for a $5 tuber is one thing - controlling the weather another.

Are there varieties that will tolerate the heat and humidity better than others? What about partial shade?

Must we admire from afar????
