There is another carinatum, German Flag available from T&M which we are trialing this season.

Are these a type of "painted daisy?" I think I read once that some don't like hot summers and am wondering about these.

I am wondering, too, if anyone has tried to grow these and failed due to intense insect damage. I LOVE the look, but they are the first flower the insects are drawn to in my garden. :0( Phyl

Yes, Phyl. The Japanese beetles treat these as if they are a gourmet item at the "All You Can Eat Salad Bar." The white and pastel seemed to be more attractive to them. For this reason, we are trialing German Flag this season. Darker colors; and, these are going to work better with our plans for this season. That is, if they work. I was tempted to just leave the Rainbow alone because if the beetles were happy feasting on these, maybe they would leave the dahlias alone.

If you don't live in JApanese beetle territory I Highly recommend these flowers! THis is one I Learned from experience on....I tried crowding mine together for long stems..my sister planted the seedlings I gave her with about 30" per plant of clear space between them. MIne were pitiful...hers grew into great clumps filled with huge colorful blossoms that lasted until frost! I will be trying them again this year in a new space where they will have room to spread out and I hope for masses of them in every color! I especially liked a form called "Polar white" but no one seems to have had seeds of it for the last 3 years. IT was white with a yellow ring around the center and just a beautiful mixer in bouquets.
