Oh, that's not a fern it's a mimosa tree.

Now I can once again fully respect my fern friends, and
turn my frustration and anger toward the mimosa and
previous owners of my house.

I feel better and worse... I just got the poison ivy picked clean
out of my shrubs, and its fall already... so stump roundup application and dig the other two sets up next spring.

Those roots are definitely not fern roots. There are lots of trees and shrubs that have those ferny type leaves.

Best time to apply roundup is when the plants are growing strong, pumps the poison right through them.
