question about boston ferns

This might be a dumb question but......

My SIL gave me two boston ferns that were on her deck all summer. I noticed that the water that comes out of the bottom is brown. Is this because of the high acidity of the plant or should I be concerened about bugs.

It probably wasn't watered thoroughly on a regular basis. Nothing to be concerned about but I usually take it as a sign that salts could be building up in the soil. Give it a good soak until the water drains clear and follow that with a light dose of fertilizer.
