The better question is, why kill the moss? What plant do you want in it's place? If you want to grow grass (yawn) then you have to change the PH. Make it less acid by adding lime, then adding more lime next year, then adding more lime. Why not encorage the moss and have lush beautiful green that you don't have to mow. Not that it's completely maintanace free, but it's a lot less than grass.

The moss is not in the lawn. (I live in southern California-not a lot moss lawns around here). It's starting to grow under some bushes that I watered heavily for a while, and I don't want it there.

Nothing wrong with it. I just don't want it there. I am still waiting for an answer to my original question, which was how do you kill the moss where it is not wanted.

Maybe you could mulch over it. That way, you would not have to use chemicals that might harm the bushes.

Your not getting the answer you want because most of the people that read this forum would prefer to grow moss, not kill it.

I live outside of Hilo, HI. Very moist climate with acidic rain due to volcano. I don't mind some moss but it has taken over in my grass, covers the rocks and chokes out plants, causes dangerous conditions because it covers things that can be tripped over and is generally difficult to walk on when it gets very thick. It also provides a lush growing medium for many weeds. I have been tearing it up off larger rocks but I would like something that I can spray on it in areas where there is huge amounts of it. I noticed a couple of posts where lysol or soapy water with bleach was used with some success and I will try small areas of it, but if there is a chemical I can use to eradicate it more quickly I would sure appreciate knowing what it is.

You should be able to get rid of it by removing what you see and adding lime to the soil. Mosses love acidic soil. Maybe add the lime and then cover the area with mulch so you don't see the moss.

But, I just learned that because when searching for information on how to GROW moss, the vast majority of what I found was information on how to kill it.

We're having a heck of a time growing grass in certain areas of our rather heavily wooded lot (there is a clearing for the house and lawn, but a lot of sloping areas, plus shady areas at the edges, and grass doesn't want to grow in those sloping and shady areas.) But, the areas are filling in beautifully with moss, which my husband doesn't like. I think it's beautiful low-maintenance ground covering which suits my wooded setting well.

Judging from the responses, I think you'd do better looking to a lawn care forum rather than this forum, which is devoted to growing and appreciating these particular plants.
