Beautiful! I had the good fortune to fine Ebony Spleenwort sporophytes in the garden this year, by the time I found them they were already a centimeter tall and ready to seperate out. They took the move quite easily. I've never thought of sowing spore in a container, I just lay the ripe fronds where they can grow undisturbed. Thanks for posting, how delightful to see that lovely green after a gray, drizzly day!

Is there a time of the year that is best for doing this? You said you started them in July. I had hoped to try this in the fall, but here it is almost January and I still haven't gotten around to it. If I gathered the spores now, could I give it a try in a few weeks? We are having a few cold nights now, down into the high twenties ocasionally.

I don't know if the time of year makes any difference. I didn't pick July for any special reason, other than I was cleaning off the top of my fridge, and thought I'd better do something with all the spores in plastic baggies I had collected over the last year.

These were done indoors, so outdoor temperature wasn't a consideration for me. If you're going to start them indoors, I don't see any reason why you couldn't start some now. I started some more about a month ago, and have tiny little prothalli growing.
