Funny, just this morning I read a garden column in the newspaper that recommened virginia bluebells for a cut flower. The author suggested mixing it with pansies and PJM rhodies. He didn't say anything about leaving a bit of root, though.

So, do you dig up the whole plant and then cut the flower? Do you then replant? Also, are you referring to a specific type of bluebell?

I have some virginia bluebells in bloom right now, so I may try cutting a few stems today to see how they do.

Are they not considered "protected?" One could actually grow Campanula which does have a longer vase life if hydrated properly after cutting.

Protected? You mean, as in an endangered species? Hmm, I've never heard that, and I bought mine from a nursery and see them advertised at reputable nurseries...

Again, what kind did you have in mind? I have Virginia bluebells, which is what I was referring to. I don't have enough to cut on a regular basis at the moment anyway.

Campanula is much later blooming though - it might be nice to have the bluebells early in the season. I'm going to do a bit of research, especially since I suddenly have pangs of guilt in case this is an endangered plant, lol!

The hills where I pick a few are covered with thousands of plants. Perhaps in the states that don't have sutable habitat for them they would be endangered.
They are very early to bloom.

Campanula blooms in May. Customers love them.
