Gypsophilia seems to do just fine here in zone 5, even in the hotter months. I succession plant it every 2 weeks. It is very easy to grow from seed. Thin your seedlings out so it has room to grow. It doesn't get as tall as many fillers, but it works very nicely in shorter arrangements.

For those of you who use gypsophila, do you use the annual or perennial type, or both? Since succession-sowing was mentioned, someone uses the annual.

The annual type, succession-planted, is far better than the perennial type if you want to cut it all summer long. The virtue to the perennial type is that it is HUGE, once established. I think the stems are a little stronger than the annual type. Its big drawback is that it only blooms once. Here, at least, that bloom is good for cutting for only two or three weeks - but it also dries very well. Looks great dried, tucked in between the branches of a Christmas tree, sort of snowy and airy. I like the look better than tinsel or flocking.

That said, I don't use either one! Too flimsy for me (I'm unbelievably clumsy) and I don't like the look in bouquets. I let the gophers eat my perennial gypsophila bushes after I stopped getting around to harvesting and drying it for the Christmas tree, and rarely grow the annual type.
