Although almost anything with feathery-ferny foliage is called mimosa by gardeners, the authentic "mimosa" is Acacia dealbata.

This is a medium-sized tree native to Australia and grown, at one time quite a bit, in California. It likes cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers.

It's also "forced" in greenhouses by a few old-time commercial growers.
