12-14cm or 14-16cm in Asiatics or LA Hybrids work for me. It depends on how many buds you want, if it's more you'll need the next size up. Which of course will cost more. Also cost will depend on quantity bought, if you buy them by the case, you get a price break of at least 12cents per bulb.

I was looking into buying lily bulbs also and recently spoke to a sales rep from gloeckner bulb. He said Asiatics start around 32 cents per bulb. I believe that was the larger size. I decided it was too late for us to try this year, but hopefully next year we can start some under a hoop house.

Also, this is kind of a trial year for cut flowers for me, so I'm not too sure of what I'm doing yet.....but do any of you grow really beautiful Oriental lilies in the field. Mine are short and look sick.....but my Asiatic lilies were big and gorgeous. Are Orientals harder to grow?

Asiatics are much easier to start with. I planted over 80 orientals one fall and we had a really cold winter and I lost ALL of them.I see that you are near my zone. First year they have to be well mulched over the winter and planted in an area that drains well. Asiatics survive cold weather with little mulching.. A great place to start.

Well, maybe that's my problem....I didn't put any mulch on them for the winter. Oh, well, now I know better for next time!
