The Cutting Garden

Anyone using rudbeckia fulgida as cuts

Is any one using the Rudbeckia fulgida, Black-eyed Susan, the Goldstrum strain, as cut flowers?

After a lot of trouble establishing row of them they are all like bushy plants with lots of flowers but no really good stem for cutting. How do I deal with this?

I find that the side shoots are longer than the middle ones, but you're right about the stems being short. Maybe cutting off the middle bud would make the side stems longer?

I've had better luck with some of the cultivars like Sputnik, Capppuccino and Goldilocks. Next year I'm adding Irish Spring to the mix.
