Baby, one thing you can do to prevent kitty from using your plant as a toilet is sprinkle Cayenne Pepper around the rim of pot. This deters them from using the soil.
Another trick I learned from a plant show is get a piece of cardboard. Cut so cardboard fits around the trunk. This way kitty can't urinate/eat plant.
It sounds like you did everything possible..especially flushing.

before I caught kitty in the act there was LOTS of new growth.. and it had blooms and fruit. every thing dropped all "baby growth" and blooms and fruit just dropped off.. then the leaves started turning yellow.. the veins yellow quite a bit then the leaf drops. this is on older leaves.. younger "juvenile" growth it put on over the summer seems fine... so far.. it is mostly the top of the plant that has yellow and dropping leaves.. But when it dropped the "baby" leaves even the baby leaves on the lower limbs dropped.. when I say baby leaves.. any thing under 1 in long dropped.
I took pictures of the tree dead leaves and brown stem.. over a week ago I was going to post about this and I took pictures then. But decided to just repot and see how that went..
I have posted "pre kitty potty", pics I took a week ago, and pics I just took.. you can tell by the dates below the pictures..
Wish I had taken pictures of the roots when I repotted..
Thanks for the ideas on keeping kitty out of the plant. So far the pine cones seem to be doing the trick. But then.. They are intimidating pine cones.. I got them in Louisiana from my aunts Big leaf pines. Huge beautiful trees!! enormous cones..

Baby, wow, you weren't kidding about those Pine Cones..I've never seen them so large! What is it about the cones that deters cats from bothering a plant/soil?

Cat urine can harm or kill a plant..the leaves on your citrus aren't as bad as I first thought, but since you've changed the soil, and if kitty doesn't use the soil as a liter box, your plant should be okay. I hope. Toni

The pine cones cover the soil and yet allow air to freely flow. And they are rather pokey.. Kitty doesn't like to have her paws poked..
Hubby had suggested Rocks but I was worried that that would keep the soil too moist.. He put up temporary fence around the tree until my mom could bring me over the pine cones. I had given her a garbage bag full to use as decorations.

I am quite concerned about the branches/limbs turning brown. I have been removing those branches as I find them. I found another one just this morning. Is this right thing to do? They have one Leaf if even that when they turn brown. The browning doesn't start at the top and work it's way down. it just spreads. seems like from the middle of the limb out and back to the trunk.. It has been over cast for couple days so sun burn can't be the cause of the last branch turning brown. I don't see any browning on the lower limbs that still have healthy looking leaves. but this seems to be going from top down.
Just leave it be and give it a few more weeks?
Should I continue cutting the browning branches?

Not to offend.. Kiddys litter box may be full, or kiddy may have infection with kidneys

It's important kitty still isn't we-weeing in your plant..Can you smell the urine since repotting? It'll smell like Ammonia.

Ok.. I have developed a theory.. I've gone over and over pictures I have taken of George since the night I got home with him. looking over the pictures I can tell the pictures in regards to when I watered. perky leaves= I watered the day before. limp leaves= shoulda watered days ago. I think the shoulda watered days ago out weigh the just watered pictures. to date George has been repotted 3 times. Repot #1: I got George home gave him a "hair cut" ( I know bad toad) and repotted him in water control soil in a "self watering" planter. I then found this forum.. Found out I did pretty much every thing wrong.. Repot #2 out of the self watering pot and in to well draining soil mix in regular pot. ( mix consisting of sand, cactus mix, perilite, orchid mix, and a little regular potting soil. Paranoid I was going to over water and he was going to get root rot. I watered with a very light hand. George had to pretty much BEG me to water him. thus I have bunches of pictures of limp leaf George from Month three. While I was sick he got even less care.. But.. he hung in there because I would still water him when he got too overly limp leaf. Then Kitty did her business in Poor dehydrated Georges pot.. It didn't stand a chance.. Flushes were not enough due to the fact George was already in sad shape.. Inter repot #3. again extremely well draining "airy" soil. Smaller pot due to root loss.. I wish I had taken pictures.. the roots looked OD.. The ones that reached the bottom of the pot were white and very healthy looking while the ones that did not reach that far were very unhealthy looking. there was no rot smell. but the roots looked like the skin on the roots was just hanging loose. I trimmed the roots that the skin was just hanging when I repotted.
If I had been over watering or poor draining soil I would think that the roots would not have been white at the bottom of the pot.?? They would have been the first to suffer root rot??
Still the questions remains.. will he pull out of it? or is he toooo far gone? should I continue cutting the brown limbs/trunk?? I checked the leaves today and since I removed all the unhealthy leaves I could tell at a glance that there were no new yellow unhealthy leaves... but the browning continues. Since the pot is FULL of pine cones there is no place for Kitty to do her business. The cones are fairly well wedged in..
Toni.. the leaves that have fallen off and I have pulled off were crisp. the healthy ones still on the plant are very flexible.

Baby, when you repotted after kitty wee-weed, did you smell urine in the soil? Do you have a good sniffer?
Thank goodness you unpotted from the self-watering pot..if you hadn't, then the urine would have sat at the bottom of the pot.
Baby, I'm not trying to tell you how to care for your plants, but it sounds like they're just a bit too dry. As I have stated in many posts, there is no set date on watering..when people say I water once a wk, they are wrong..some plants need more watering than others depending on heat in house, lack of humidity, soil, sun, and pot side/type.
Are you feeling better now? If so, perhaps you can tree outside and hose down..If it's small to medium size, you can do this in the sink or shower. Also, make sure when watering the complete rootball is wet..
Then, after a few days check soil..Stick finger about 3" into mix..if your finger comes out moist, recheck in a few days..if dry, then water. It's almost like baking a cake w/the toothpick test. Don't be afraid to water, Baby..
As for brown stems, when u cut a piece is it brown or any green inside? If green, then let be..I wish you the best..btw, what made you decide to name your citrus, George? LOL..Toni

Dale & Toni - I think if the cat heisted in the soil, BabyBlue would definitely smell it. Cat urine has a lingering stench.

AAE, that's why I asked BabyBlue if she had a good sniffer..I talk to one person who has no sense of smell..I will not mention names of course..
One whiff of cat urine in soil will knock one out of their socks..

After repotting I did smell slight urine smell in the old soil but right now my allergies are raising havoc with my nose. It could have been over whelming and I would not have noticed due to poor sniffer right now.
George is the reason I went to New Orleans. Well.. rather.. My grandpa George. Most ppl knew him by his middle name though so when I say George even my mom didn't realize it was in honor of her father. My Grandpa died in the middle of January just a few days after my birthday. My mother and I went to Louisiana for his funeral. It was my first trip to Louisiana. Mom and I were just driving around seeing sites. I didn't realize I was in a turning lane till it was too late. and had to turn as there was a cop directly across from me... I took the turn and drove down the road deciding we were in no big hurry and it looked like a lovely street. I figured I'd just make a big circle to see some of the town and there was George sitting out by the road begging me to take him home.. I stopped and turned around to get a better look. Mom told me I should make sure that was the one.. I looked at ALL of the many Kumquats. George was not the biggest but.. there was something about it. I just had to have him.. After a few days.. of having him home.. I gave him the name.. because if it weren't for grandpa I wouldn't have it.. I believe in planting trees to honor loved ones. I've had to plant 4 trees this year. all my life I've only ever planted 4 trees to honor loved ones. this has been a heck of a year. I also have a Magnolia in the front yard for other grandpa. and a few trees out at my mom's farm for others. Heh I sit here thinking of Grandpa George and.. well.. Miewa Kumquat fits him. Sour at first impression and sweet once ya get to the heart of matters..
I really hope George makes it.. If not.. I have the grafted tree... I have considered getting more cuttings but am worried that would add more shock to it's system. The cutting I have growing is doing beautifully. But then again.. maybe cutting it back so the roots won't have to work so hard to provide for the top? and it could concentrate on healing the roots?
Yesterday I "treated" George for root rot. formula I found here 80% water to 20% bleach. I did the in the pot treatment as I didn't think repotting again would due it any good.. I let it sit in the bleach formula for about an hr. then flushed the pot with clear water 4 times.
I don't know that it has root rot.. but I figure couldn't hurt.
I have noticed the remaining leaves have darkened. a very deep green more like it was when I first brought it home.
The brown... I scraped the bark and there is no green under it... The brown is still continuing to move down the tree but seems at a slower pace. HOPE??
I guess only thing left now is to wait and hope.. Unless anyone else can make any more suggestions?

I am glad to say.. I think the brown has stopped. before I could see more and more brown every day.. it has now gone over 24 hrs with out any new brown on it!!!!
All the leaves currently on it look pretty healthy.. I just put up some new pictures if any one is interested..
Nola is doing great also....

I would like to add something: diluted urine 10 times doesn't smell at all after watering. It is sterile. If it is not people would have symptoms: burning and urinary frequency for bladder infection, high fever and flank pain for kidney infection. Well, then one would need treatment.
