Harvest the millet before the seed heads start to form. When they do, the finches will discover the wonderful All you can eat buffet. After they have feasted on it, the heads will fade to a dull brown. Before that it is beautiful with all the muted colors in the flowerhead. The plants will continue to send up shorter sideshoots.

Your white popping sorghum looks a LOT like my Johnson Grass, which we do NOT like! I just pulled off some seed heads this afternoon that looked something like that. Guess I'd have to see them side by side.

In December 2002, Arnoskys wrote that White Popping Sorghum looked like an "improved Johnson Grass." They said that it might not sound like a glowing recommendation; however, they actually get alot of requests for Johnson grass heads!!!

We didn't like this sorghum so much last year, and thought we wouldn't grow it again. Somehow though it got planted out; and, it looks much nicer this year. Sometimes you just have to give things more than a one year trial. The millet is actually taller this year than last.

I have been using purple millet leaves as foliage in bouquets - looks nice on the outside of a mixed bunch - just an idea.
