Weekend Trivia --Saturday

Happy weekend, dear cottagers. Let's play trivia.

On September 3, 1967, a nationwide change in the law happened in Sweden, in spite of the fact that its citizens had repeatedly voted against it for the previous forty years. It was referred to as HÃ¶gertrafikomlÃ¤ggningen, and if you spoke Norwegian, you would know what happened on that day. It affected most of the population, and, in a fairly significant way, changed something about their behavior forever.

If you look closely at the Norwegian word, you may be able to discern a very good clue about this event. Can you guess what happened?

Since I've got 5 mins, I'll bite.
I see trafik and laggn sorta sounds like 'lane', so I'm gonna say it has something to do with traffic lanes. Since your saying is was a huge change, my guess is they had to change what side of the road they drove on.

OK, I'm embarrassed. I meant to post this to the cottage garden website, as I do a couple of trivia questions there each weekend. When I couldn't find my message there later in the day, I thought I had just forgotten to hit the submit button. Sorry everyone, for the off-topic mis-posting.
