Got Rain?

We do!

It started this morning about six o'clock. Was a wonderful sound! Last night I had drug out all the soaker hose to put in the first block of daylilies. I decided it was that or watch buds start to drop major big time. I even called the county extension agent to have him start getting together the information necessary to start a slow drip irrigation system. He called back this morning while it was raining. Don't need it for this week but I think I'm going to go ahead and have him work something up for me for the future. Supposedly they can set up this irrigation system for about $140 per acre. I think I can live with that.

Who else is dry right now?

It seems the rain is either torrential in some parts of the country or desert dry in the rest.

I actually went out in the rain to empty my rain gauge so I could see how much I will get today. I had to empty it from sprinklers, not the free stuff from the sky. I don't think we will need to do the rain stop dance Janet, but whatever, we will enjoy it.

Oh you lucky people!!! No rain down here in south central Bama yet!! It's dry as a bone, except where I am constantly watering! I've had soaker hoses going all day today. I will be so glad to see some rain, even a little, just to know it's still a possibility!!! Brooke, can we do a rain start dance, please? :)

1.9 inches in the gauge at the farm by 5:00 last night. Don't know how much we got later. The kids and I were run out of the beans at 7:30 by more rain. We were dry enough that the creeks were just gently running. The daylily field finally had enough moisture that I could pull those few knee high weeds that were too firmly anchored last week.

Hope the rest of you that need rain gets some soon! (And we get some more next week!)

Yup, we got rain. Again. And flash flood warnings. Again. BUT, on the bright side, I don't have to go water the new plantings we put in at our church last weekend.

Lucky you Janet - my total was 1/2" in the a.m. and another 1/2" over night but I happily accept it. If my house is in the right place, at the right time, I might get more today. Right now, the humidity is so thick out there you can barely breathe.

Jan you and Laurel need to do some trading for rain. Two years ago I had massive rains for two summers. I don't think we ever did supplemental watering those two years but for the last two years, we are paying for it. I wonder if there is ever a NORMAL year?

None here. In looking at weather radar, it seems to go both north and south of me, but only a sprinkle here. The bright side is that we have fewer mosquitoes than in most years. Very seldom see one. I have been running sprinklers a lot and most daylilies look ok. (The weeds are really growing well).

What is it that weeds ALWAYS look good??? The daylily blooms were starting to look pinched even in the mornings from lack of rain but the smartweed, foxtail and rag weed were lush, green and growing. I know they don't have tap roots to China but they sure can suck the moisture out of the ground.

Well...the bad news is that our rainfall is 18 1/2 inches below normal.

The good news is that this weather pattern is keeping hurricanes away from our coast.

So, everyone here is afraid to complain too much about the lack of rain. Everything just keeps getting browner and browner in the FL panhandle.

It looks like Janet got rain a couple of times this afternoon and I got it once. A real gully washer for about 20 minutes and then a steady rain for another hour. I can hear the garden (and weeds) growing now.

Started raining around 3pm and still coming down steady. The temps have been in the mid 80's with 100% humidity...condensation on everything including me. DL's like it though.

2.8 inches and it was pouring coming into work this morning. It's amazing to walk the daylily field after a rain and see which flowers stand up well and which don't. Generally speaking, my yellow and pink flowers looked like mush. The reds and purples seemed to hold up much, much better. Several of Curt Hanson's purples hardly looked different from a regular sunny day.

I doubt that we'll be able to do much digging during open gardens this weekend. I think it's supposed to possibly rain on Friday too. Then it's going to get up into the 90's with a heat index of 105.

Anyone want a low cost sauna?

    Janet

Lucky you - my down pour yesterday afternoon was a whopping 1/3". It gives me a total of 1 1/3" while you got 2.8 and more rain for you this a.m. My rain this morning has consisted of spitting or just water laden air falling on me.

Thank you I will pass on your sauna, I have my own.

    Brooke

Ditto on the sauna.........geez, I can't stay outside very long today!!!
Out of all that "rain", I got a whole 2/10"

I won't need a sauna this weekend - 90s and humid, ICK, my least favorite summer weather. I have a bunch of yard stuff to do, and no ambition at all to do it. I did venture out earlier today to dab a little pollen, but I don't know if anything will "take" in this heat. Maybe I got to them early enough in the day - we'll see. I haven't had great pod set so far this year - maybe 50%, being generous. Of course, if everything I dabbed set pods, I have NO IDEA where I'd plant all the seeds I'd get.

Famous last words: I'm going to get a little more organized and buy some plastic window boxes for the seeds I'll sow and keep indoors over the winter. I had dismal luck winter sowing daylilies this year - four out of several dozen sprouted, and only two of those are still alive, just barely. The two plants started indoors are thriving in the garden, and should bloom next year.

The yuk weather was here all day. Every time I stepped outside, more spitting. My total rain for the day is a trace. I guess you would call it a trace because if you tip the rain gauge, a teetiny amount of moisture gathers on the one side. With the spitting and overcast, at least the moisture wasn't being sucked out of the ground. On the upside, I have daylilies blooming today that are finally up to size and some waaaaaay oversize. I guess it is moisture they lacked.

It rained here too, off and on all day. Everything got a nice soaking, which is good because I haven't had time to water. My boss has been working me to death, and I've been getting home way to late to water and have to fight the mosquitoes too. They love me for dinner. But even worse this year are the chiggers. I can't even go out the front door without getting a dozen chigger bites just standing on the steps. And if I go into the garden, Lordy! I get eaten alive. I have to really want those boysenberries and tomatoes to wade through the biting insects to get them. Maybe tomorrow.

We had some kind of weird, wet, stuff fall from the sky today. It's been so long I'm unsure, but I think it was ... rain. We got 1/2 inch. It's a start. Everything looked rather perky for about an hour. Then someone turned on the furnace.

The ground here is hot as melted tar. I was working in the beds this morning but my feet and hands wre burning from the hot ground..( no lie) I had to quit. I will try to water some this evening if it cools off a bit. Those poor roots..if it burned my hands and feet, thinks of those poor roots. I WAS wearing glove and I WAS wearing shoes AND socks..Go figure....Ellie

Five inches since this time last week. I can honestly say that we are in good shape rainwise for a few days. Two inches Friday night. There was so much water in the ground that it squished when you walked the rows. Now to get that chickory and ragweed pulled before it dries out....

You know, it's funny but I sorta had those weeds under control until last week....
