grapefruit pruning

There are a grapefruit and a navel orange in my yard (rental). The fruit is great and I'd like to get the most possible. In the two years I've been here, there has been a great increase, probably due to watering and fertilizing. The trees have branches intertwined and dense. A few days ago I broke off a lot of dead limbs on the grapefruit to make it possible to get inside the foliage. I can now measure the 80 inches between the trunks, and get the circumference of the grapefruit tree - about a foot above ground as 20 inches. The orange is about 2/3 as large. Now I'm told that one shouldn't prune citrus. Does this apply to dead limbs that easily break off with verly little pressure ?
