A humble beginning...

After 4 years, my little piece of our Earth is beginning to take hold - still not close to Dan's or Dave's, but still very tranquil and satisfying - please enjoy!

    Nothing humble about that.

A very nice and well balanced garden.

Your big landscape boulders is a nice touch.

Thanks for sharing your accomplishments with the forum.

Very nice and impressive photography. Im like Dax, your birch trees are real pleasing.

    Beautiful!

I am struggling with design right now, and pictures like this help me tremendously. I have a hard time getting past having large expanses of bare mulch, but when I see how nice that can look, I become more reasonable.

    Thanks for sharing.

very nice looks neat and clean.

    I agree. Very nice.

What are the stunning blue and yellow conifers in think it was pic 12?

Wow, a very nice setting! Maybe humble in the beginning but you've obviously been doing the rounds at nurseries, selecting the better plants and mixing them well together and with those great rocks. Nothing sets it off quite like good rocks. Parts of your garden kind of remind me of a south-west garden, full of trees that look both decorative and highly tolerant of heat. We don't have that look to trees here because they are full of moss! :)

So glad you shared these shots, the more the merrier and the more inspiration we all have.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words - I have lurked here for over 2 years and have learned so much from your experiences, I wanted to share what you have taught me and give inspiration to others.

Ken - it takes alot of green to get rid of the grass :) Still working on drainage issues as we are on the corner and receive the entire blocks' run off - taxodium is my new best friend. We are in Olathe KS - suburb of KC. Zone 5A/B in a 12 yr old subdivision. My Dad and I built the patio in 2006 and the Pergola in 2007 - thank you for the compliments.

Toronado - the blue is p.p. Continental - stong blue with a traditional Christmas tree shape. the yellow pom pom is a juniperus chinensis Saybrook Gold that has been formed into a classic pom pom. To the right is cedrus atlantica Aurea - I am in the process of " fish hooking" - the birds will love it in a few years.

Will - as Dave will attest our summers can be quite brutal - the subdivision is so young that micro climate is a long way off - adapting the plan to the native enviroment was a must. I think Ken has stated that thriving and surviving are 2 very different things - I have experienced both :)

    Thanks again everyone!

    Beautiful job, just lovely.

Very nice garden, it's beautiful now and as it matures will be stunning. As I'm sure you, like my self know you never stop planting

I'm a big fan of your yard. That pergola looks fantastic and it's great that you built it yourself. It must be really rewarding to see how well it ties in with your hardscape, bed design and nice plant selection. I like the boulders too. Great looking garden, enjoyed the tour!

I agree, it all looks so good!

The rock and the Pinus mugo 'Jakobsen' look great in the last pic.

What's the tall pine directly behind the round topped rock also in the last pic?

Looks great, hopefully we see pics of your garden often!

Am I seeing Larix or Cedrus?
If the latter please do share the cultivars!

Yes, very nice! I love your selections and how it all works together. Fantastic pergola too!

I want to know how you found such cool rocks! (especially the one in the last picture?) Keep the pictures coming!

Severnside - the tall pine is a Pinus parviflora azuma goyo - in the ground for 2 years - looks to be about 8 years old.

Whaas - I wish I could grow Larix - I have lost 2 within 2 months here - the humidity just knocks them out. My micro climate is not established enough to support those beauties. The cedrus that a I have are Cedrus Atlantica Sapphire Nymph, Blue Cascade, Aurea, Blue Atlas, Horstmann and a Libani Green Knight

Robyn - I found the large rock at a local nursery - the other were at a wholesale "rockery". You may want to Google search your area for landscape rock - good luck
