seeds germinated--What do I do next?

Hi everyone,

I am new to daylilies and have started some seeds inside. They have all germinated and all look like little blades of grass. What do I do next? How do I look after them until I can put them in the little outside greenhouse or outside? The outside greenhouse is just a mini one with polythene cover, not glass.

One of the seedlings is a bit floppy but the rest are all upright. Why is that one different? Do I need to be doing anything different?

Any advice and especially pictures of what the seedlings should look like at various growth stages would be brilliant!

Happy New Year!

Nikki

Nikki - look at the seed starter thread for more tips but sounds like you are doing something right already if you have sprouts. My first year, I had more than a few floppy ones because I didn't have the seed deep enough - I took the advice of bury them shallow TOOOO seriously - no strong crown to support the emerging fans so I was advised to add a little more soil gently around the base to steady up the "foundation" so to speak. We would love to see pictures of your seed starting on the other thread too...

    Ahh, Thanks Shelly,

that's most likely the mistake I have made. I wasn't sure how deep to sow them so they did go in quite shallowly!

Thanks for that, I'll make my next lot deeper.

I'll try posting some pics but I'm not very computer literate I'm afraid, I'll need someone to show me how to do it!

I found Brian/lilynut's seedling pictures! They put my seedlings to shame, but I guess that he has been doing it a lot longer!! I've e-mailed him to ask for some advice/tips.

    Thanks for your help,

    Nikki

How deep should they be planted that's not too shallow and not too deep? And is the depth from the top of the seed or to the bottom of the seed?

Ours usually have approx. 1/4" of soil over the top of the seed for indoors and outdoors close to 1/2". We haven't tried planting outside in the fall yet.

    Hi Nikki,
There is a page on the internet that shows pictures of every phase of growing seedlings. I don't know the gentleman who put this on the internet, and there is not a lot of explanation with the pictures, but it took a lot of effort to get this site all together. The only unfortunate part is that the pictures are not in the correct sequence. Many of the pictures about starting seeds have dates to show their progress, so use the dates to get the sequence. Lots of pictures also about pollinating, seed pod formation, seed storage, record keepping, etc. Just remember, this is one person's way of doing things - - not the only way.

Hope you are as successful in getting them through to spring when you can plant them outside as you have been in getting them to germinate.

Thank you Larry and Shellyga for your comments on my web site. I created the web site just for fun and as you (Larry) correctly stated it is my way of doing things, and not the only way. I will be trying the paper towel/coffee filter method for the first time this year and will add it to my site. The site is do for an up date and is on my list of "Things to do". Very best of the season to all and keep on growing.

What a good thing to do for the new folks trying to get their feet wet. Too bad I didn't find your site 4 years ago! Bravo

    Eldon,
Thanks for sharing your photo diary on hybridizing! What a great resource for newbies like me. I really appreciate all the time you put into that. Let us know when you do the update.

And thanks, Larry for posting the link to Eldon's site.

Nikki, good luck with your new babies.

That is a great help! I know what I need to aim for now--mine look quite weedy in comparison but it is my first attempt so it is a learning experience! But what a great site for us newbies to refer to--thanks!
