Plants for Difficult Places

Anyone tried a low, three wire electric fence?

A neighbor uses one. Claims it works. Lives in an area with moderate deer pressure. The wires are 8" apart. Three of them.

I'm about to try it. My vegetable garden was previously "protected" by a very elaborate combination of electric and netting. It didn't work as I was very lax in remembering to turn on the electric fence. Most of the damage seemed to be done by rabbits.

Supposedly any animal when approaching the fence will sniff anything strange, get shocked then move on. Possible?

I'm likely to do something in between, low 3 wires with some higher up, 4' or 5'. Then I may try a motion sensor light.

I haven't but would be very interested in your results as I have a rabbit problem and the rabbit fencing around my roses is rather obtrusive.

Rabbits became a problem for me over the winter (first time since we built here in 2005), so I already have perennials that they like to eat. In March, I started spraying I Must Garden rabbit repellant and it's working quite well. I think it is supposed to be safe for veggies, too. It's made locally here in Chapel Hill, so everyone around here uses it more than any other repellant. The downside of spraying any repellant is that it must be done consistently every 2" of new growth (about twice a month).
