Probably not. Most turf species are not happy in any kind of shade, and certainly not disposed to compete successfully with the kind of root system that most maples have. The amount of pruning required to open up the area to sunlight penetration would be detrimental to the trees. And no matter how you look at it, trees are more valuable than grass ANY day!

Mulch the area where grass cannot grow, and it will look like you planned it that way.

Especially if you plant some low ferns or hostas or shady groundcovers under the trees.
