Containerized grapefruit

In the spring, I am going to splurge on a grapefruit tree. Anyone know how they do in containers compared to other Citrus (it's the only major group I currently do not have). Any info on relative cold hardiness would also be useful. Thanks in advance!

    How are you?

Of all the citrus trees I have, the grapefruit is by far one of the easiest, resilient, aromatic, greenest trees I have ever had of citrus..

I LOVE them, and they grow very well, even up here indoors..

If you chose to purchase one, you will not be disapppointed with the "oro blanco", my favorite, or the "red ruby".

It has never givin me a problem with yellowing leaves, or drop foliage..

The fruit takes hold well, and is sweet, seedless, and not acidic..It sort of tastes like a cross between a sweet navel. It grows good fruit and ripens easily, even indoors.

The flowers are magnificent, fragrant, and huge!

Hope this gets the ball rolling for you..

By the way, you were right, my citrus LOVE the cold enviroment and no artificial lighting. NO bugs, and lots of blooms...Thanks

    Take care,

    Mike..:-)

Happy to hear about your healthy Citrus! Just don't take it too much to the extreme (like too much below freezing). My Meyer's is still blooming away in its winter retreat--which is currently averaging in the upper 50's. I passed recently on the Oro blanco and it was sold. But actually, I think I'd prefer the Red Ruby. Based on your experience, gotta get a grapefruit tree now!--Thanks.:)

Oh, by the way. Just heard on the radio that the Citrus crop in California is being threatened but record cold temps (last night and tonight). Are they currently shipping Citrus out of Florida or is the ban still in effect?

    Hey how are you?

Thanks. I hope your trees stay healthy too..

Speaking of "red ruby"..I actually have one that is only 6 inches tall and ready to burst with flowers...lol

It loves the cold conditions as you say..This is the best info anyone could of shared with me about citrus for my growing area..I owe it all too you and so do my trees...Even my meyers are doing well with not one leaf lost yet..

Wait, I do have one meyer, that is still outside in the greenhouse that is loosing a couple leaves here and there, but that is because with such a lack of sunlight, the temps are too warm in there to support healthy growth.
Into the cold room they are going too this week..

I am not sure if the ban is still in effect..But givin the amount of responses and participation here lately, I suppose by the time you get an answer, you will still not have ordered one yet..lol

    Take care my citrus friend..

Florida's ban is lifted. They claimed canker is not
carried by fruit. Funny thing, HLB is carried by seed
and is a greater threat to their citrus than canker
(their words] and they want to give to Texas and
California. Saw Fl fruit in Houston markets already.

About container g.f. Can you get a golden g.f.? These
are a hybrid of an orange or mandarin, another chance
seedling. They grow uright and are low in bitterness
very sweet, very cold hardy, and bear heavy every year.
I have two in the ground and everyone wants me to give
them my whole harvest. The only negative is seeds,
but we eat them with a soon and just dig in around
the seeds. The inside is soft like a mandarin not
crunchy like a g.f. and a little orangy flavor but
still g.f. like. Also early, almost like a satsuma.
And the size is of a Rio Red, about 1.5 x ruby red.

Texas is quarintined due to syllids. [My key to right
    of "o" quit. I'll use a *] I think a guy in the
Southeast is selling them. Ned Rahm I believe. Maybe
    *lantfolks nursery?

Got to get this thing fixed next week, sorry guys.

Tangerine X tangelo hybrids work for me.

    Larry
