Plants for Difficult Places

We just had a deck and pergola built and now need to plant something to grow up and over the pergola (28ft x 9ft). The entire deck is about 28ft x 30ft. - pergola is at the rear away from the house. To the east of the pergola is an area about 14ft wide and 28 deep. I would like to put in a fountain with some plantings in this area. Any suggestions - I am about 7 houses from the beach - lots of salt air.

Someone suggested grape vines - another suggested clematis. I would like to learn about plants that would do well in this area.

why dont you think about akebia quinata? it is a great vigorous vine along the order of wisteria but the flowers are much smaller and thus do not attract so many bees. the foliage is gorgeous so please check it out!

I'm in zone 5a, like you? I intermingle roses and clematis. Dr. Huey has no die back, it's a red rose, once bloomer. Jackmani clematis is the hardiest clematis, large purple flowers. Here's a pic of them together. Eastern concord grape has "no" dieback either...if you want a grape.
