Old wives' tales.......

Old TX wives' tale: Once the mesquite trees leaf out or the huisace bloom, there will not be another killing frost.

I saw both today. Also, at the for sale house the saucer magnolia, columbine, white iris and red bud were beginning to bloom.

What is the one for you area?

I don't know about the last killing frost but in my neck of the woods you don't plant your tomato plants out until the snow's off Mt. Benson.

Sandy, oops , I mean natvtxn! I think it's lilacs here. I wish I hadn't gone out to look, my azalea buds are gone and so are the tips of most of my roses. There's a new subdivision going up behind my property that was once a strip of woods about a half mile wide and two miles long. The developers cleared the biggest part of it before they started building. Now the deer have lost so much habitat that they visit my yard and gardens almost nightly. I can't shoot them here without a neighbor turning me in or I would. On a lighter note, the daffodils are about 2 inches tall, the pussy willows are blooming, the maples are blooming, and the buds on the viburnum, dogwood, redbud, magnolias, and what are left of the azaleas are swelled and ready for action. Here in zone 6a it's usually early April before things really get going, but I've seen snow and frost as late as April 29th. Anita

Around here we don't plant our veggie gardens until Memorial Day.

On the bright side 3-4 more weeks will be time to start the indoor seedlings for the coming year.

I was so excited, today the temp hit 35 and the snow was starting to melt, it's now close to sun down and everything is froze up again, including my barn door. That was fun getting it to close tonight.

I always go by "when the leaves on the pecan trees are the size of a mouses ear" (can be seen). Everyone here says plant after good Friday but that doesn't always work.

How about this one...When the maple leaf is 3 inches across it's safe to plant. I like the mouse ear one. Did anyone ever measure a mouses ear???

I never measured a mouse's ear. The time I stepped on one, I was movin' too fast to take time to measure.

    In London.
Nothing is safe to plant out untill the end of May.

BTW, we had a light frost or two, but not killing frost after the trees leafed out.

    When I share a plant I hope they don't say " Thank You "
because I was told it wouldn't grow. So I say " Your not welcome "

"The soil is warm enough to plant in when you see the first rattlesnake."

Saw him and killed him last week. : )

I've heard the one about not saying thank you.
OMG Diana a rattlesnake, if that had been me DH would have to call the fire dept. to try, I said try and get me out of the tree tops across the street, I'm OK with garter snakes but only if I see them first.

I too have heard about not saying Thanks, but my training is too strong!! Here, we say 'when the leaves on the lilacs are the size of mouse ears', it's time to plant peas. They don't say which lilacs, or which mice....and, we are not safe to put tomatoes and other tenders out till the Victoria Day Weekend, which is now just the may long weekend - which is a week before our New York counter-parts!!

I only have one old wives tale and it was from my Granny. I can still remember her voice and the words she said will stay in my memory as long as I live...She said,"Cheryl Ann, don't you never wear a red dress. Red drives men wild and you can't never tell what they might do."

Course it has nothing to do with gardening, but that's my 2 cents worth on the old wives tales. Cheryl
