I just read a report on weather.com that stated that as of today, 5/24/03, Atlanta is 0.15" away from breaking the record for rainiest May. In order to break these droughts, it forces above normal to almost excessive rains to make up the deficit - but the key is that it soaks in and doesn't get wasted as run-off. It should be interesting to see what my area stacks up with when May is over. We've actually had alot of overcast days, but not the excessive rains of other areas. In fact, reports had indicated that it was actually "dry" here the first half of the month, despite the clouds.

Congrats on the end of your drought. We are in year five of a major drought here in Utah even though we did get some good spring rain. I'm already on water restrictions that allow me to water only twice a week. It could be a hard growing season.

Jenny you are right about the excessive rains. I collected 5.28" of rain over a two day period about two weeks ago. This month alone I have had 11.60" at my house, whereas the total you mentioned seeing on the web is our "official" total which comes from the airport. I live about 12 miles from the airport. We all wonder sometimes if they keep the rain gauge at the airport under a roof, or if it leaks!

LOL. Or perhaps it is up against a plane hangar. :-P

We ended up getting close to 2" of rain here overnight and this morning prompting flood warnings. I don't have an exposed area to place a rain gauge (am in an apt. with covered balcony) but if that figure pans out, it would put us back towards a normal precipitation for the month. A shame it all has to come at once like that which = floods (and the city was under a Flood Warning this morning and into early afternoon) for some of the larger creeks. It would be nice to see the sun again. ;-)
