Smaller chairs is a good idea. Also a very light color (white or grey) sofa (see attached for style). Although you mentioned no modern, you could add accent pillows with colors that you like as it acts as a blank canvas. I would go with a round rug (more inviting and shows more of your nice wood floors) in a green (warm color) or a blue of your preference. I personally like the walls but a darker color would give you that warm feeling you are looking for.

Love this soft and neutral color palette. The wall color is Benjamin Moore OC23. The sofa style recommended by adam99c would be a great choice. I also suggest a significantly larger area rug.

Perhaps if you live near a Room and Board Outlet you could get a sofa that meets your needs, something more pulled together. The picture over the sofa should make a statement and be closer to the sofa. A brighter color will help with the palatte

I agree with paanderson regarding the photography or art you choose. But, you must really like the art above your sofa b/c you said you wanted to keep it. It seems to be in shades of gray so I think the gray sofa you mention should work well and you can add accent pillows, lamps and vases.
With gray, so many colors will work even red if you want to go very bold. And if you tire of an accent color you can easily change it. You dont say what part of the country you live in so I can't really suggest places to get new area rugs. But, I do know that Target actually has a huge selection of different price ranges on their website. Once you get your sofa, you can check them out. They will send them to you or you can do as I did, I fell in love with one but found a specialty rug store that carried it. It is called Rug and Home (they have a website too but it was under construction the other day) By tracking down a local store, I was able to see it in person. I love area rugs with a more modern motiff such as branches myself.

Marshall Home Goods is a great place to get quality home decor items. You never know what they are going to have so it is like a treasure hunt when you go. They have rugs, lamps, tables and more if you are not familiar with them. Different stores will have different items. Check out Etsy.com too they have unique items created by Artisans from all over the country and throughout the world. Just put what you need in their search engine. You can get photography ( I have a shop, nancyhehmann), paintings, pillows, throws, quilts, jewelry, plaques, pottery. A lot of the artisans do it part time; but some have actual quit their day jobs.

Have a great time. Do a little and then shoot another picture. I think pictures of your space really show people what it looks like because sometimes you can just be too close to the subject matter.

natcap I like how you layered in colours and textures, you seem to have a good eye yourself. Trust in your own abilities here to create this room with the feeling you already enjoy.

All the colours you like you currently have, so switch it around now, use the blue as accent, if you choose griege walls, then perhaps an oat/white/sand coloured fabric which will give you endless options for tossing in your ethnic prints and colours you love.

What direction does your room face? North light will make the room look differently than south or west, test your wall colours thoroughly in the space before committing.

paanderson, I just discovered Room & Board and WISH there was an outlet near me (I'm in Los Angeles). There is a store nearby though and went in the other day and drooled over a ton of stuff.

Susan, that pic is GORGEOUS! Truly, an incredible mix of ethnic, color, and comfort. Those chairs are amazing. Def. the feel I want. Unfortunately my living room doesn't get a ton of direct light (I'm in the lower floor of a duplex) so these walls would be too dark, but the color is beautiful. And although I covet a white couch, it's not practical, so I'll probably go with a taupe or mid gray color. But I'll use as inspiration for sure!

Carolina thanks for the suggestions! Was in Marshalls the other day in fact. Def. hit or miss and even though they didn't have any rugs I wanted I was able to find a ton of other stuff I don't really need :)

The most comfortable and durable one I have ever had (and still have is a Drexel) You can go online and see the different styles and you can customize them with different fabrics or leather (different grades as well) They have a store locator too.
