My 10-foot goumi was about 4 feet wide. We are taking it out this year, it has only served as robin food. I like the flavor but the seeds are very large relative to the fruit size. If you like tart pie cherries you will like goumi.

Thanks! I have never had a pie cherry so I suppose I won't know until I try some. If all else fails I will have something for the birds. Maybe it will keep them off my blueberries. Yeah I know wishful thinking.

Yup! Our blueberries are about 25 feet from the goumi and had to be caged to keep the birds out. Goumi will ripen weeks before blueberries.

Robins dig the goumi, that's for sure. I don't mind the fruit myself. Its a very easy plant to grow and that's rewarding. The flowers are interesting and the fall color is nice. Definitely worth having, even if the birds get most of the fruit.

My Goumi are flowering now. I have a hedge of seven of them planted about four years ago and three more planted in another part of the yard which are a year younger than the originals. I got all mine from Raintree and they are the Sweet Scarlett type. You can smell the lovely sweet scent when you get near them. I love the berries myself and so do the birds. They are too sour to eat until they are really ripe and then the flavor is wonderful. Tart, and I mean tart with a flavor unlike anything else. I just love them!

I bought 3 from Burnt Ridge and they are all doing ok. I am really looking forward to trying them. Thanks for the tips on letting them get good and ripe. I did get one of the Sweet Scarlett and 2 seedlings. Do the flowers attract bees?
