Having had hardy kiwis for about 20 years, I'd say that 1) the galvanized pipe would probably work, they're not too fussy about what they have to twirl around and 2) as long as you realize and OK with the fact that the fence will be solid with vines in a few years, should be OK. I'd verify that the posts are set in cement and the whole thing is REALLY sturdy, first, because the rampant growth would make it kind of vulnerable to blowing over in heavy winds IF the fence isn't sturdy to begin with. If the fence is constructed according to normal standards/up to code I think it would be just fine.

I'm just not sure 1" galvanized pipe could withstand that kind of stress. You'd need to run the calculations for shear stress for the material in it's anticipated configuration for the weight of the plant and also in high winds -- and 7' is a big wind break.

But my gut says the pipe can't handle it. I've seen a lot of bent and cracked galvanized pipe on chain link fences.
