Pam- Have you thought about turning your teeny front yard into a potager? It can be formal or more cottage style, but it's a great way to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers, all together in a small space.

Roses are really pretty along the edges, as are raspberries, blueberries or other edible shrubs. A climbing rose of clematis looks great over an arbor, maybe for an entrance into the garden.

Canadian hardy roses and rugosas would do well in your area, along with some hardy albas and gallicas. Hidcote lavender is supposed to do well down to zone 4, so it might be a good choice to put in with your roses (it likes the extra water) and just give it a little protection in the winter, or plant both out of the wind.

You might want to visit the potager forum, or look for Jennifer Bartley's, Designing the New Kitchen Garden: An American Potager Handbook or Sally Jean Cunningham's, Great Garden Companions...she has some cute ideas for edibles in the front yard. Have fun and good luck with your garden :)
