We need to know what activities will be taking place in this room, plus room dimensions. A sketch with dimensions and doors and windows marked on it would be extremely helpful. Who will be using the room? Adults only? Children? TV?

I'm not the best artist so I will try my best to explain:

Pic#1 are the windows you see as you enter the house
Pic#2 is directly right (fireplace)
Pic#3 is the front entry to the house (opposite tall windows)
Pic#4 is directly left (housing a 73" TV)

The use would be a living room / dining room as I do not have another place to formally dine (you can see the table in Pic#2). The room is 30x15 feet. We are 2 adults and an awesome dog (no kids) living there. Thank again for your time and help on this! :)

The chaise pictured above would be your sofa. You can see it in the foreground of this next photo. Where the sofa is in the photo would be your TV wall.

I'm also posting this photo to show you a good distance between your table and chairs and fireplace. You are blessed with a 50' long room, so you will have plenty of room to do this without anything feeling too tight. Also, the equal distance of your buffet and chairs on the opposite side of the fireplace is equally important.

For window treatments, something like the first photo - mounted high - would accentuate the height of the ceilings and add drama.



To minimize the ceiling height and support a more intimate room, curtains mounted just below the top windows as in the second photo should do the trick.



For furnishings, what style do you prefer - modern, traditional, transitional? There are all sorts of choices. Your house seems to be built in the mediterranean style - do you want to stay in keeping with that style or depart from it?

Thanks Manion. Also, if giannad should decide to dress both levels with side panels, I very much like adding the 2nd fabric which can pick up the paint color. It is another way to ground such a tall treatment.

The room already is pretty spectacular! The challenge is measuring up to the expectation the room is setting. I would say "richness" is the word to bear in mind as you select fabrics. That shouldn't be too difficult since you like the Medtterranean look, so well known for rich,vibrant colors.

Yes, Karen - I like the idea of a a second color on the curtains as well.

Because the room is long, I would place the panels between the windows. The effect will be almost architectural and will further frame your views.

Since you like the Mediterranean look, I would recommend a Persian or Turkish area rug. They are very versatile. Here a couple that are quite beautiful:

For a sectional, I'd choose one that sits on the ground as opposed to one with exposed legs. It will help ground the room.

I visited your site and found the trees. Absolutely place several of your favorites in pots since you will have so much light streaming through the windows. It's a great way to bridge the gap between the soaring ceiling/windows and low-slung furniture. Depending on space,s you might consider doing either one or two trees next to your buffet. That will help define the area with the height of the trees.

Karen, how tall do you think those tree are, 12 feet? I think it's a great idea you had to put them by the buffet to separate the area. The pic of the full on TV wall is #4. Very nice ideas guys, thanks!

Yes, they are beautiful! For size, I'd prefer closer to 10 X 12 (larger if possible). The perimeter from rug edge to wall will be about 2 1/2 feet, but since it's an open room, I think you can get away with the wider perimeter. 8 X 10 will be too small for this space.

Why did I think your room was 50 x 15 rather than 30 x 15?...wishful thinking?:)

No, #4 picture does not give us the full wall. You will need to do something on either side of your TV. That is why I'm asking for a full shot with the TV in the middle. Thanks!

Manon, I'm thinking in this particular instance we might want to think in terms of one very long oriental rug rather than two. Since we will have broken up the space visually with furnishings, we might want to take the opposite tact with the rug?

The trees need to come last, once everything else is in place. I would most likely specify them to come just above the first level windows. Good thing about trees is you have options. Get everything in place including your window treatments and see whether you need to go taller or more moderate. This now becomes the issue of scale....balancing ceiling, windows, furnishings and placing trees to do the heavy labor of what needs to be added from a perspective of overall scale.

What do you guys think for the color of the sectional? If I went with something like a light gold tone, what colors in a rug should I look for? Gold with hints of red, blue, green???

Gold in an oriental rug is a given, so you can pretty much choose what other colors you want in the room. Do you ever go to auctions? You may well have a room size that will enable you to find a rug in that size, without a huge price tag. The larger rugs are not so easy to sell. So, you might want to begin exploring what is available in limited quantities and then you can put together a "watch" list. You would be so amazed at the bargains for rugs that don't meet the usual specs. Just keep your sizes on hand. along with whatever options you may have for size, and just be patient, alert and aggressive....all at the same time.

Yes an oriental almost the length of the room would be absolutely amazing! Oh, the luxury of it . . .

For sectional color, I'd go with a light and warm neutral - light buff, ivory or light gold. I think a color similar to this one in your idea book would work with any oriental carpet you choose.

Yes, 10" sounds about right. I haaate the TV, it's such an eyesore, but my boyfriend loves it and there's no where else it would fit in the house. I suppose I have to admit, it is pretty cool on movie night though:).
