There are quite a number of varieties of h. fulva. Many are triploid which leads to the notion of being "sterile" however, that is not exactly correct. They are "self-sterile" and will not easily set pod.

With many, many cross attempts (hundreds) it is possible to get them to set pod using other daylilies or for their pollen to set pod on another daylily.

Early hybridizers used them (Dr. Stout, Perry, Hamblin, others) in hybridizing and several current hybridizers are experimenting with them today.

I have gotten some seeds with it each year by using Tetrapolid pollen on it, I do hundreds of crosses, and get 8 to 10 seeds each year. It usually looks like every cross takes but most of the pods are empty and abort. I'll be seeing the first seedlings bloom this year, and I am told that they will probably bot be anything special, but I'll cross them with other tets ans see what the next generation looks like, that is when I am told I'll probably get some decent plants.

A word of caution only, this plant can spread! Here in the cool climate 4-5 years from 3 or 4 fans will be 30 or 40 fans.. Do not grow it in a area where you want to cultivate other daylilies.
