I would say the spacing depends on how large you let the trees grow. In my fig orchard, I space rows 20' apart and trees 10'. I am going to plant between the rows in the future, making 10'x10'.
I don't want large trees that require ladder picking, so I prune to prevent trees growing too large.
The NW apple orchards I am told have small trees.
I live in South Texas and battle the few hard freezes that occur most winters.

Figs, like other fruit trees, grow according to varieties.
Some grow only to 7-8 feet, while others can get to 30 to 40 feets but as Pappy rightfully says, you can always prune them (and share the cuttings...lol) to keep them at the desired size.
When I was a kid, in Italy, I remember people used to interplant fig trees with grapes and they used to prune the figs at the same time as the grapes in order to control the shaded area and those fig trees used to be loaded.
I do not know how large is your lot but if you have a large area than give them room, like 20 x 20. If space is a concern, then you can plant closer or use the 15ft center like your other fruit trees.
Fig trees are very manageable. In Japan they even use the espalier method for commercial culture. I have tried it with LSU purple and it works well.

I am growing a hedge made up of eleven fig trees of different varities, spaced six to seven feet apart. Six feet is a little close, but I've talked to others who are doing the same.

As for planting two or three in the same hole...I wouldn't. My observations of mature trees is that they form a very dense mat of very fine roots which extend out from the trunk. I would think that two or three in the same hole would be too much competetion for any of them to thrive.

Just my observtion and thoughts...I could be wrong.

What you CAN do...and what others are posting about on the other forum, is to graft different cultivars onto a common rootstock. That would give you a greater variety for a small space.
