I have these growing in my shaded perennial garden. Ilove them for fall blooms. I have always winter mulched them very heavily in my zone. They grow to approx. 18" and only spread about 12". I also deadhead for continuous blooms. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your response! What kind of soil do you have? Mine is a clay based soil so I hope they don't mind these conditions.

Keep an eye out at Walmart, etc. Last year in June we bought a flat of toad lilies for only 49cents a pot . All thrived and bloomed from late August to the 3rd week of September.

They are more exquisite than flashy. Something 'different' and elegant once the bulk of perennials have finished.

I have had my plant now for just over a year. The first year I got it did bloom but then it came from Vancouver Island. The second year it didn't. I don't think our summers are long enough for them. We'll see how it does this year. Fingers crossed that it will bloom for me.

I also have clay-based soil. I like to amend my planting area with alot of compost before planting anything. Although one area of my garden is mostly sand and ammending it is proving to be a challenge the toad lily seems to be doing fine there.
