I only received the original email notice at the time I placed my order, they said I was added to the March Mail out, so I was surprised to wake up this morning to fedex giving me a box full of fig cuttings.

I only hope that this person is forever removed from receiving these cuttings. I can't believe someone would have the gall to think they wouldn't be caught on this by fellow fig lovers. I can't believe anyone would stoop so low, to abuse a such a wonderful resource and potentially screw it up for everyone.

If UC Davis wanted to sell their cuttings...they would already be selling them on Ebay. It costs US Davis quite a bit of money to gather and ship out their plant material for "shipping costs only" for research purposes. I sure hope no one starts selling UC Davis cuttings for pure profit. If many ebay users started to do that.....that great UC Davis program would simply die.

Hmmm ... I caught a link to this thread from the other forum.

As I said there, I don't believe in coincidences. There are one too many similarities with regard to variety of scion ordered from UCD versus what is for sale on eBay, too similar between the location of the sale versus location of the member ... looks pretty clear-cut to me what is going on - Ayyubaddeen is getting free cuttings from UCD and selling them on eBay.

I don't see how this could be disputed - with the member in question being from Zone 9/FL and the auctioneer also being from Jacksonville/FL (which is z9) ... the chances of another person in Jacksonville, FL getting the exact same cuttings from UCD that you find on eBay is virtually impossible. You would have better luck winning the lottery than to reproduce these odds.

I find it to be deplorable behavior. I think figlover summed it up well: "shame on you". Anyone who bids on such auctions after reading this is not much better in my book.

Well, I can think of one person who just put themselves to the bottom of anyone's list when it comes to trading, buying cuttings or otherwise. I hope UCD is able to take action also, and refuse to fill orders for this person in the future.

Even though I would not sell the cuttings I received because I have a use for them. Not to mention I think its the wrong thing to do. It may be that ayyubaddeen simply received more cuttings than he can use. He may have ordered them with every intent of using them then found other cuttings to use before they arrived. Without knowing his intent when he placed his request I think I will reserve judgment.

All that aside. Something tells me that this thread is not going quite the way ayyubaddeen intended it.

First off I am not selling anything on ebay let alone my cuttings, I pictures I can post to prove that I am in the process of rooting more than half of the cuttings I received and the others I am giving to friends. I dont even have an ebay account or a credit card to open one if I wanted to. Secondly what I do with my personal belongings is not anyones business especially people on a forum that I don't even know. If someone is selling figs from Florida that doesnt mean its me, I'm not the only person in Florida!

Martian I read the post at Figs4Fun. I see what you are saying. Even the cuttings in the picture above do not look like cuttings from UC Davis. It all looks bad. Its just that I have seen so many misunderstandings in my years. Most were based on circumstantial evidence that seamed so convincing but later turned out not to be true and he is defending himself. Hopefully the seller can post or send pictures of the trees he took cuttings from and bring the speculation and accusations to an end. If not I have to agree the circumstantial evidence seams fairly convincing.

The picture is ucdavis cuttings, I cut them in half and put 2 in each cup because they were so long I couldn't put ziplock bags over them (that is how I root them) I took the bags off to take the picture, the rest of the cuttings I received are in the fig, and overs I gave to local friends, and whate I had left I was going to give to members here but I highly doubt I'll be doing that now since I have been harassed for no reason...Everyone who has accused me on here can go to hell and I hope ALL YOUR FIGS DIE AND GET DISEASED!

ayyubaddeen, Only jesus cursed the fig tree, that was because it bore no fruit, you can't curse them like that, it will come back to you. I didn't want to comment on any of these threads, here and in the other forum because I didn't have any proof of what was being said, I was a victim of people jumping to conclusions and forming opinions without knowing things so I understand the frustration that goes along with this. The problem is once you start spouting off accusations, people always have it in the back of their minds and it sticks. I have just a handful of persons from the forums now who contact me about fig supply, but that is okay, I have many good customers on forums and outside of forums who are faithful and loyal and who know me and that I don't need to lie, cheat or steal from anyone or anything, so I am thankful to that.I had Complete strangers who ridiculed me especially when I tried to defend myself. Ayyubaddeen, if you didn't do it, leave at that, but don't lower yourself and start curses. It will just bring you down. You know, cursing others and wishing their plants to die and be diseased is a fabulous way to make people believe you. Really, I think I feel myself coming around. Despite my love for statistics and the glaring probability there's no way on earth that this could simply be "coincidence", I think I believe y.... ok, maybe not.

On 2/26/11, I PDF'd a copy of the items for sale on eBay to compare. Sure enough, the original auction items are a perfect match to the list above, many in the exact quantites and sizes perfectly matching what many of us know UCD sends (3 cuttings, 6"-12"). If you add up the mixed bundles on the auctions, you come out to ... surprise! ... 3 cuttings of each variety at 6"-12" each. The auctions started the same day you posted this thread, with the same items you list in this thread. You and the eBay seller both are from the same state of the USA, in the same USDA zone, which puts you both within no more than a few square miles of each other. The UCD shipments are spread out over a 4-6 week period or more, with a few people per day getting the cuttings all over the USA. UCD literally just started shipping in the last couple days, so hardly anyone has even gotten cuttings yet, a few dozen people have received cuttings at most.

Basically, what you are asking people to believe that in the first ~48 hours of UCD cuttings being shipped, out of thousands of orders placed from all over the USA and thousands of possible varieties+species of plant material, two people in USDA Z9 of Florida - living within a few square miles of each other - somehow managed to order the exact same wide variety of plant material from UCD, and with the randomness of delivery all over the USA, they also received their packages on the exact same day?

And further yet, after these two random people who are practically neighbors got the exact same load of cuttings, one of them put the cuttings on eBay, while the other did not?

I think I speak for many when I say I am skeptical because the probability of this occuring naturally as you say is virtually impossible. You may be truthful about one thing: It may not be you selling the plant material, especially based on the eBay username (nickname of 'wala' would indicate a female), but I don't believe for a minute that you know nothing about it.

Unfortunately, I think if you would have simply said, "I took the cuttings I needed and gave the rest for sale on eBay, I didn't think anyone would be offended and I won't do that again", I think a lot of people would have patted you on the back and been OK with it, and everyone could have walked away on a positive note and been happy. But when you curse everyone and point fingers to redirect others, you're stuck with both images: "That guy who took free cuttings from UCD and sold them" plus "That guy who cursed and cussed the people who called him out on it".

I may be wrong about all of this, I admit that. I also believe that - right or wrong - if this went before a jury of your peers, based on the evidence uncovered and probability of it all, I bet you'd be found guilty in a court of law, and that's what I'm basing my opinion on.

I just hope, if nothing else is learned from this, it's that the UCD Germplasm is an incredible source to hobbyists and researchers alike. It costs money to maintain. If they catch wind that people are doing this - which I believe they likely have after this incident - we may lose this opportunity completely.

Some people will think I'll bulldogging here, and I apologize for that. When someone's first post around here is, "Hey, how can I get some cheap or free cuttings?!" and then something like this comes up ... I have a hard time grappling with the fact I feel like I'm being taken for a ride.

I just wanted to refine what satelitehead said above. It is not all of florida that makes this a little beyond probability, it is just the roughly 800,000 people in Jacksonville Florida, where both the ebayer and the other both have identified themselves as being, in various other posts made by username ayyubaddeen. If you do some searches with that username here in Gardenweb, you get a number of posts from ayyubaddeen, in Jacksonville, FL. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but I did. In a town of 800k, with 9 of the 15 oddball, (only available from UC Davis) varieties bragged about above being offered that same day on ebay with both from Jacksonville??? Oh, and the ebay listing says 6 - 12 inches, I imagine that the cuttings from the repository were halved, (which is what ayyubaddeen said they did) thus providing up to 6 pieces of each variety to root, give away or...?
Anyway, just wanted to clarify that it is not all of Florida, but just Jacksonville Florida that makes this such an amazing "coincidence".

I showed my cutting in clear cups rooting I dont need to prove myself to anyone anymore. If you want to act like your .... dont stink thats your business but guess what it does!

Have you guys noticed how frustrated ayyubaddeen is. He has lots of typos now and plus I am having trouble understanding what he is trying to say.

Ayyubadeen, As a fellow Floridian, let me say that in my opinion your reaction pretty much confirms all the suspicions. You show your ignorance by claiming that Jacksonville is the largest city in the country and are now reacting like a kid that got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and is getting reprimanded.

Frankly I do not care what you do with your fig cuttings.
My personal concern is that should UCDAVIS make an issue of THEIR cuttings being sold on ebay, they may change the program in a negative way and affect an INCREDIBLE resource for fig lovers.

A much better approach would have been to claim ignorance and apologize for selling cuttings from UCDAVIS, grow your own trees and then cut and sell all you want.
People are incredibly forgiving and it may still not be too late to wipe the slate clean.

I hope your fig trees grow well and you enjoy all the fruits.

I know I am not a familiar face here on this forum so please forgive me butting in but I feel like I have to since I recently put in a request for fig cuttings and also 2 years ago I requested pineapple plants from them.

I really do think it is unfortunate that anyone would try and take advantage of such an awesome program! I know for myself, I would not have been able to buy the pineapple plants that I got. Some, you just cannot find anywhere, and also the cost. I live on a fixed income and thanks to the USDA Germplasm program, I was able to get these plants. IF all of us were punnished by not being able to take advantage of this free program anymore, then this person does deserve all the negative feed back that he/she is recieving.

I think people need to play by the rules. Wether they are your cuttings or not still doesn't give you the right to turn around and sell them for profit. IF the USDA were to know that this was your intentions, do you think that they would have in turn sent them to you? I think not!

trees scions, seeds too!
