Overwintering ideas

Hi all,

Just want to run some ideas on overwintering figs by you all. Just getting started with one plant and trying my hand at rooting some cuttings. Anyway, when next winter rolls around, I will need to bring it in. That's where my problems begin. I'm in zone 5, Nebraska, and it just gets too cold on the prairie to leave them in the ground. Here are my thoughts:

Case I

I am considering moving it inside the house. Problem is it is all heated area, with the coolest spot still being 68F to 72F. Will this be ok, if I move it out into the garage later in the winter/spring when the temps get back to something more safe, like into the 30's? That would still give it a rest. What do I do with it between fall and late winter/early spring? That is to say (ask), how will it do in the basement at 68F to 72F for 3-4 months?

Case II

I could try leaving it in the garage, but it is uninsulated and gets basically the same temp as outside. I'm pretty sure this will not work and I will have a dead stick in a pot in the spring.

Case III

I could dig a fig cellar, but that sounds like a lot of work for each fall. It would have to be at least 4'-5'deep to get below the frost line and tap into the geothermal heat below frostline. Not really an option. I'm pretty sure just buring it won't work, because frost goes to 40" or so around here in a bad winter.

Any other suggestions? I don't have access to anything more suitable.

Thanks in advance,

Mark
