Don'tcha just hate it when...

I was moving a salvia that had seeded in an awkward spot & an empty spot it would be perfect for. Got the plant pulled out, the shovel in my hand, when I dropped the shovel right on top of Edith Sliger. Edith was FULL of scapes. Notice I said "was". I broke several of the largest scapes. I could just kick myself!

That is one of those times when one deffinatly wishes for a do over. We have all done similiar things. But its so frustrating when one looses all those would be blooms.

    Grrr.

OH MY GOODNESS:How terrible.I know you had to be very upset for some time.I think every one does things simular at times. It IS upsetting, when we wait soo long to see a bloom.

All my empathy/sympathy. I swear that my butt and my feet grow to cartoon size when I work in the garden. No matter how careful I try to be, something is stepped on or broken off by an arrant cheek....

    Condolences from a fellow been-there-done-that.

Hope to cheer you up with what my Edith S. is doing this morning. I'm not a big fan of chicken fat, but Edith keeps her place because she's such a performer.

My sympathies...:( I would be so mad at myself.

My husband broke Malachi the first week after I planted it last year and it only had the one scape. Consequently, I did not get to see it bloom last year. It is hard to wait a whole year for blooms.

I think I've gotten over it now, but thanks for the sympathy. I didn't lose all the scapes, just the ones that would bloom first, about 4 big scapes. Last year Edith bloomed well, so she'll probably just send out more scapes.
I tend to like chicken fat Vickie, but not when they hang up & never open up fully. Edith seemed to open well. This will be her 2nd full year in my garden so I am looking for it to be great.

rh, Edith Sliger is really looking good!

ngraham, I do things like that ALL the time. She will put some new scapes up! I'm glad you have some left though. She's lovely!!...Ellie

I did that this weekend with my shovel and American Freedom. The handle slid down the wooden fence rail and broke off some of the fan at the base!

GRRR as Renee said. Hopefully she'll recover quickly.

Oh, I'm good at this! Usually it happens when I'm taking a photo. I position myself just right...zooming in for that perfect shot...I squat just a tad hoping for the perfect angle...and I hear a SNAP! I don't even turn around and look, anymore. I pretend like I didn't hear it and blame the dog later.

I feel for you. Funny rarejem!! A lot of you sound like me. I can relate to the camera story. I have placed the last few daylily beds in rows of three or four, so I can reach in and pop off spent flowers without hitting the tops of other scapes and breaking them off. It is really disheartning (sp) when you've waited all year to see one bloom. By the way, I have been to Edith Sliger's garden a few times. She is a great person. Her grandson helps her in her garden. She lives near the picturesque town of Helen, Ga. Sarah

HAHha. This post had me rolling!! Which is great.. b/c it TRULY is depressing, especially when the plant is still small, so you're only going to get one scape and then you break it..
This happened to me a few times last year
*lectures kids.. "please be VERY VERY careful around mommy's plants.. see this ? We DON"T snap it or bop it around, because if it breaks.. no flowers."
*2 minutes later, I step backwards into it and snap it off*
    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Boy, one time I wasn't looking where I was weed whacking as I was doing the trim on the grass and the weed whacker went right over my beautiful clump of Joan Senior right before blooming time. I was 'hoppin mad' at myself, I never fully appreciated the term hopping mad, but I was literally, hopping up and down, !!! I don't even know how I did that. It grew back really full, but no blooms that year!!! I have it in two spots now, and I've learned to control the weed whacker. Cindy

    Chicken fat???

gardenfanatic- Chicken fat refers to the edges on certain daylilies. The thicker the edge, the more the term chicken fat applies.

I've done that too - SO frustrating! I have to be careful with the hose; I've knocked off more buds/scapes than I care to mention with an errant hose. . . .
