Apparently the best hip producers are the rugosas and many are hardy to zone 2. I have Therese Bugnet and Hansa to name two that produce hips and are very fragrant as well.

Definitely Hansa, Andrew. It blooms all summer and has lots of hips. What do you plan to do with them?

Fru Dagmar Hastrup & Darts Dash, both Rugosas are great for hips and smaller than Hansa. Prairie Peace & Suzanne have interestingly shaped black hips but take up quit a bit of room. All of these are hardier than the Parkland or explorer roses and don't die back at all during the winter.

Most of the hips are going to get dried and shredded into tea. Although there are some other interesting things you apparently can try with them.

I managed to find several good links on Darts Dash. Does it really have that nice of a hedging form? What kind of height is it getting to for you?

I'm interested in something that I can keep organized in a row or hedge similar to raspberry or currant canes.

Dart's Dash and Fru Dagmar are both about 1m high and wide and have required no pruning in 6 years. I think DD would make a nice hedge. It always has some bloom on it and the fragrance is great. Mine comes from Hortico and is grafted so that it doesn't sucker but I am sure it would sucker a great deal like all my other Rugosas do if you want that for your hedge.

Have you looked at Corn Hill Nursery (www.cornhillnursery.com)
the have it int their catalouge and even say it is their favourite for hedging. If you live east of Manitoba I would recommend them. I ordered 3 roses last summer, one never recovered from shipping and the others were never very vigorous. Cornhill refunded the one rose but then I had the shipping covering just 2 roses. They are, however all own root and they have a great selection.
