One quickie if you have access to the tree just use your thumb nail a scratch just the top bark off a very small area. If you see the color green then I would say buy the tree if you feel you want it. It should still be alive and when growing season comes in your area it should recover nicely. Let me say from what I just went through I would repot it when I got it home so you can give the roots a good inspection. If it's root bound you may have to do some root trimming described on this forum. You may have to gently wash the soil from the roots to get a good look at what your dealing with.

I say "go for it" if the wood is green when scratched. Also, a close examination of the plant will likely reveal life, or NOT! Terminal (end) buds usually show some green upon close examination, while deas twigs look, well, DEAD! This fig may simply have gone dormant rather late, and is only now getting ready to wake up again. Keep us informed!
