Gardeners I hope you will understand

I am moving into a new house in two weeks with fiance. It has a huge yard and is a wonderful blank slate. But last night I dreamed that I was crying and crying that I had to leave my current garden. My current garden has been a healing garden for me is very beautiful and I am so sad to leave it. Do you think even by gardener's terms I am psychotic and need help :)

    Hi Ginger,
No,you are not psychotic. Everyone on these forums would completely understand what you are going through. I hope I never have to leave my garden. We put so much of overselves into it (and get so much back!). But just think of all the exciting new things you can create in your new spacious yard! Who would not want MORE ROOM?! You can start over, fix any mixtakes you made, and that will be so much fun. It is hard to leave something you love behind, but once you throw yourself into making your new garden, the sadness will fade. And maybe, you can take some of your old garden with you (if the new owners don't mind)? Good luck,

No, not at all Ginger, you don't need any psychotic help, its normal to be sad with tears. Many of us gardeners have gone thru this heartbreaking ordeal, you just need some empathized talk and in given time you will heal and come thru just fine. YouÂll see ;)

I cried and cried too when I first heard that we were going to move. I was even at a point where I was going to leave DH just so that I wouldnÂt have to leave my garden, I was serious, I did not want to move.... DH promised me a rose garden (acreage) and he kept his promise, we found a beautiful quiet piece of land and I have all the space to garden with now. I look back at my old garden photos and I wonder how the heck I did it in such a tight spot. I'm so glad that DH hubby talked me into moving now ;)

You will too, you will have all the space to start over again; maybe you can ask the new owners who buy your house if you can go back and dig up some precious plants that are dear to your heart and plant them in your new garden?

Ginger, I can totally relate to your agony over leaving your garden. I'd be heart-broken too if I had to leave my garden behind. Like Sharon and Judith said, maybe the new owners would let you go back and take pieces of some of your most precious plants. But do try to focus on the excitement of what a blank slate can be for you. And just think, now you'll have a new partner to share your garden with and make new memories.

Thanks ladies the new owners of my house are ecstatic to be having my garden, so a part of me is happy that they are so happy. They said that was the factor that sold them on the house so I know they will love and maintain it as well as add their own touches. I am going to take a snippet here and there but generally leave it as is. I will water the water lilies though that have been nurtured all winter in my basement. So glad to know I am not the only one who feels this way when they leave a beloved garden

I definitely understand, I moved last September and it's still bothering me. I hope a season in my new garden will make me feel better. I sold the house through an agent, and communication with the buyers was completely discouraged, so I had no idea if they wanted the garden or not. I asked the agent twice to put somewhere in the agreement that I would be taking what I wanted from the garden, but he said it didn't matter and just take it. But I was still scared of repercussions so I left I lot I would have liked to bring. I'm too scared to drive by and look but my old neighbour told me the first thing they did was throw out the raised bed gardens I built with my own hands.

Anyway, Ginger, take lots of heart that the new owners will love and care for your old garden. I wish I knew the same.

I've lived in 7 different states and have cried as I left each garden. Knowing I made the yard prettier helped. Begin excited about a new garden helped. But I still felt sad. And I still miss some things from each garden I've left behind.

Especially a beautiful weeping cherry tree in Atlanta.

And a Japanese Maple in Baltimore.
