Our friend has some Manitoba's and little yellow ones (the name escapes me right now) started for me that are already 4-6 inches tall.

I'm planting mine out on the south wall of the house this year, as an experiment (and because we're likely tearing down & rebuilding the green house this year. If it's done in time, I'm sure some will wind up in there too!!)

Nothing like those fresh tomatoes and peas!!! I can just about taste them now...

My tomatoes are up. I 've started my usual Sub artic and Manitoba, plus 2 new varieties Pilgrim and Sunstart.
The Sub Artic seeds I saved myself. The germination was fantastic. I am also going to start saved seeds from my grape tomato and tomatoes from my dad (unknown variety)which were awesome. I'm hoping that I have the same luck with germination on these.

I have a few "Manitoba Improved" tomato seedlings that are about a week old. My plan is to plant them out early, using Kozy Koats. Last year I planted them approx May 1st in their Kozy Koat but the actual plants weren't that big because I didn't start them indoors early enough. This year may be the same. They do pick up considerably in growth once inside the kozy koat, however. I guess I still have to wrap my mind around this entire "using kozy koats" thing.

Last year I tried a tomato called Keepsake and it was fairly nice, though sort of more firm, fruit.

I don't have any room under the lights for tomatoes. :( But the type that always does well for me, is Celebrity, so I'll pick up a dozen plants at walmart along with a cherry tomato or two.

Sharon, have you grown Sweet 100s before? They are an awesome cherry tomato, produce like crazy and taste great.

I don't have a veg garden yet so I don't know what I will do. I might grow a few in pots or I might get around to building a veg garden yet this spring. If I do plant any it will be Grandpa's heirlooms, Romas and Sweet 100s

I have a mixture of cherries- sungold, sweet 100, and yellow pear. I have trays of mortgane lifter and mr stripey up. If I decide any more types, I'll buy some black/purples to try frrm a guy who starts about 3000 heirloom seedlings every spring for sale at farmers market.
I'll pot up the cherries, and have the veggie garden almost ready to go for more maters! They're just about ready for a first transplant. Any I don't use, my borhter will, or I'm at our farmers market too!

You gals are all making me hungry for a tomato sandwich!

Gil, no I have not tried Super Sweet 100, I wonder if these are the same as Sweet 100? I've grown other cherry tomatoes in the past but I figured I would try this variety too.

I planted my toms, etc. April 12th and most are up already. This year I have Manitoba, Arctic Fire, Arctic Sunspot, Sub Arctic Maxi, Arctic Pot N Patio, and Sweetie. Arctic sunspot and Sweetie are new to me. Last year I planted them April 26th, put them out under a garden blanket in late May until July 10th or so, and had my first ripe ones by mid August. Maybe this year I can get them out a bit earlier - can't wait. I also planted Earlisweet and Passport melon, Sugar Doll and Lantana watermelons, Summer Medley summer squash, and Northern Spirit pumpkin. I've never had luck with watermelon, but I keep trying. My peppers are Early Sunsation, Giant Marconi, and Mini Bell Mix, and I like the Magical Michael basil. I can taste those tomatoes already!

I'm seriously considering putting out the wall owaters right now. It's been over 60F here the last 3 days and I'm getting antsy! If I put the WOWs up, at least I'd feel like I was getting ready!
Besides, the 80 or so seedlings in the sunroom need reportting- they are for me, my brother, and the local farmer's market this summer- and about 20 will go in pots.

Curious: any recommendations for a small cherry/grape tomato for a planter? Last year I saw a house with urns full of annuals and each had a trailing tomato plant full of small tomatoes. It looked great and I'm sure tasted even better.

Is there a 'best' small tomato in the Far North for hanging baskets or trailing down a planter?

'Tiny Tim' is great in a planter. The plant and the tomatoes are dwarf, and the tomatoes taste great. I'm not sure I would exactly call it hanging though.

Sharon, I don't know if Super Sweet 100 is the same as Sweet 100, I didn't actually notice the name difference ;) You will have to let us know how they taste!

Vrie sounds like tomato plants are over running your house, lol.

I have my Kozy Koats filled with water and in place and am thinking about planting out a couple of tomato plants later on in the week. That's really only 3 to 4 weeks earlier than planting outside on the May long weekend. If it doesn't work out I have a few backup plants. I still have to wrap my head around the entire concept of using Kozy Koats. I suppose if we get cool weather as long as the plants themselves don't freeze they'll be alright but the more sunny nice days the better for growth.

It just seems like we live in such a short spring climate. One month ago the snow drifts were beginning to melt. In another month it's the May long weekend.

I clicked on the first photo and the image on the right of the page gave me a laugh.

My tomatoes are all 4-6" now, and in 3" pots. I had to sink them an inch or two when I transplanted them as they were starting to get leggy, but now that I have them in the green house during the day, they've more than doubled in size are are keeping a relatively compact form. I have nearly 3 dozen plants...oh gosh, what am I going to do with them all?? (A terrible conundrum indeed ;o) (I'm giving a couple away to mom and my SIL, and then I'm planning on making *lots* of canned toms, salsa, etc. throughout the growing season. My green house should be full!

That's a neat idea for hanging them upside down. My neighbor drills a hole in the bottom of wine bottles and plants her geranium cuttings in them to make a really neat hanging feature. (They trail down just a little ways, and then grow back up around the bottle.)

I went to Home Depot today and they had tomato plants for 1.29. Couldn't resist. I bought 16 varieties. Our sun room is being well used. Now I have an excuse to pester the keeners on the 'Tomato' forum.

Glen, that's how I feel about the WOW's. I'm not sure they're worth all the effort, but last years plants inside were bigger, even if they were planted at the same time. It's supposed to be 75 F this weekend and just a week ago it was white rain! As for the garden, I have a lot of seeds in the ground already, because I couldn't wait. Mostly stuff I could put some glass frames over if it gets REALLY cold though.

And who's overrun? I started alot more last year! LOL! What else is a 22ft by 6ft southfacing room with 13 windows for besides tomatoes? Oh I suppose a couple chairs and an ashtray for the smokers, but the chairs are for watching squirrels, the 4 flowerbeds out front, and 15 feet of shelving for seedlings! And that East rock patio that no one uses, well, that'll hold 30 big pots, no problem. And I can bring the good bearing ones inside again to eat cherry tom's for Thanksgiving!

I think I might be slacking this year! I don't have enough flower seeds sown yet! Those tom's took up all my shelves!
