help! black knot on my chokecherries

I've got black knot on my schubert chokecherries. I can still climb the snow banks to get to the higher branches so I'm going to prune out the knots (galls) tomorrow. With what do I sterilize my shears between the cuts? Do I have to put something on the cut surface of the branch?

Right now is perfect time time to prune before the fungal spores are released. No need to use prune paint to heal the cuts.

Dipping pruners in a pail of 10% bleach solution is recommended. Make sure you destroy (burn) all infected wood.

I need to do that soon on my Mayday too.

As soon as my snow goes down far enough that I can get at my chokecherries and Maydays, I need to do the same thing. It's also much easier to see what you're doing before the leaves come out.

Well it was -12 this aft and I went out with my little bucket of hot javex solution and pruned away, hope that'll control the knots, thanks for the info Sharon.
