melting - how do you know if roses are alive

I know that I'm getting WAY ahead of myself but I cannot help it - it is finally melting ... my tiny 17 x 17.5 ft back yard [townhouse size] has 4 feet of snow covering my new 'cottage garden'. Last fall I planted 4 roses: Lambert Closse, J.P. Connell, Prairie Joy and a mystery rose. As the snow cover disappears, how soon will it be possible toknow if they have survived the winter? Should I do anything to try to protect them from "freeze/thaw" as they reappear from the snow? I am a rose novice and really hope that they have survived. After that I just have to try to figure out what I can put with them in my space.
