I've done a lot of digging on the net this past winter looking for peonies.
Personally I only have had double flower peonies which require stalking. Last fall I bought 3 Japanese type and am anxious for them too bloom. I have read that neither the single or Japanese type need staking because their flowers are not as heavy.

My neighbor has a long planting of fern peony, probably about a dozen or 15 plants. They look good all the time and they're never staked or fussed with at all.

Some of the ones that I don't need to stake are Smouthi, Buckeye Belle, Coral'n Gold and I don't think Pink Hawaiian Coral needs to be staked either(will know when it gets more than 3 flowers at a time). They are all singles or semi-doubles with strong stems. I'm hoping that Leto won't need staking as well, but it's new(hoping for a bloom this year)so I won't know for a few years.

Maybe Pudge's neighbor has their fern leaf peony in a better spot than I do, but mine tends to go dormant later on in the summer, so the foliage doesn't look that great like the others do. Btw, Smouthi has very lacy looking leaves compared to most peonies and I think, is very attractive. It's also a very early blooming variety, it's not far behind the fern leaf for blooming time.

Thanks you have mentioned some I have seen and liked. The fern leaf peony's in the single variety is a yes, also Peter Barr a single that I used to grow very early and lots of blooms with interesting fine foliage and neat seed pods.

Smouthi and Leto and Coral'n Gold caught my eye as did Crinkled white.

This may or may not be a fall project depending on getting the front yard all changed.
